Proposal

Idea pitch

We live in times of big things: almighty multinationals, superpowers & big deals made by big shots. There is little space left for "small things" of our everyday life. But why big things seem to be so overwhelming? Why we do not perceive billions of small particles, actors & actions from which they are composed? Because we lack narrations that would enable us to see & understand all the interrelated details. Thus we are often blind & ineffective in what we do. We need to connect the dots.

Where will your idea take place?

Wrocław (& 4 other European cities)

Why does Europe need your idea?

Debt, austerity, enforced migrations, fast food, pluralism-turned-nihilism & many others. We cannot address all these problems but we can approach their common root & create a solution scheme. It has to take into account the following elements: (A) we often do not recognize the true source of our everyday problems – we feel helpless; (B) we often do not see that our problems are shared by millions of others – we feel alone; (C) we lack collaborative strategies for action – we are inefficient.

What is your impact?

The project will: (A) enable people to recognize accurately their everyday problems & track the source-to-result consequence chains (connect the puzzles); (B) show that many problems are common for people across Europe & the globe (connect the actors); (C) link people from different groups & make them look for collective solutions (connect the strengths). The outcome: a replicable solution-scheme applied successfully to some base cases. The change: more accurate, informed, participatory actions.

How do you get there?

[A1] a research on popular perception of "small things" (through the lenses of 'fantasy')
[A2] action groups in 5 cities indicate 5 concrete base cases of everyday problems (such as: unemployment, smog, junk food)
[B1] local mixers (based on the concept of business mixers) bring together different stakeholder groups to deliberate on the base cases
[B2] leaders travel/study/describe matrixes of relations & consequence chains (global mechanisms to everyday impacts)
[C1] citizen panels with experts & decision makers
[C2] solution schemes are collectively elaborated by the action groups on the basis of collected material & applied
[dissemination] global connecting platform – a crowdsource interactive internet map presenting interdependence of everyday problems & global processes

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

We mix perspectives of various groups: hip-hop artists (recognition), migrants (diversity), entrepreneurs (efficiency), activists (involvement) & teenagers (innovation) from various origins (tentative list): Wrocław, Budapest, Galway, Zaragoza & Umeå. The global C2 result (also mobile) will deliver the project to broader audiences, enabling more people to: (a) understand problems (sources & outcomes); (b) connect with others indicating same problems; (c) connect strengths, network & collaborate.

What makes your idea stand apart?

The project is rather based on proven solutions & good collaborations than cutting edge innovations. The very mix of the techniques applied makes it a bit unconventional. The selection of target groups might seem surprising. What makes the project special is the overall approach focusing on an attempt to see the general picture, perceive everyday problems in their relation to global processes & explain it. A crowdsource interactive map indicating all these interdependencies will be innovative.
