Due to the current situation in Syria, a huge amount of people have been displaced, with some of them seeking asylum in EU. The existing policies have not been proven adequate or well-planned so far. Due to that, conflicts have been escalating in transit and hosting countries. The purpose of this project is to unveil these conflicts and find out the myths and stereotypes that are based on, in order to map them and provide the necessary base of evidence for a future advocacy campaign.
The Syrian Conflict has triggered the world's largest humanitarian crisis since World War II. Among others this conflict has lead so far more than 300000 Syrians men, women and children to seek asylum in European Union countries. The European response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis has been until now generally inadequate, while it has been challenging the values that EU has been founded on. Moreover, a potential flammable wick that could trigger a major conflicts in our near future has been born.
This project can not solve on its own a complicated problem as such. However, it can provide the evidence base for a paneuropean advocacy campaign and help in the deconstruction of myths and stereotypes around refugees. Furthermore, we intend to correlate this project with another project that will host a forum on holistic and multidisciplinary Culture of Peace, with participants coming from various environmental, social and economical networks, thus fostering its multiplying effect.
The main activity of the project is to map the conflicts around relocation and resettlement of refugees in Europe. The mapping will be conducted to an open source mapping platform and later on the data will be licensed under Attribution + Noncommercial Creative Commons Licences. Concerning the complexity of the project we need to a) create transparent open channels of communications, b) provide to the partners the necessary conflict mapping and conflict transformation tools and c) use decentralized agile management methodology, such as scrum and scrum of scrums. After the completion of the mapping we will have registered the conflicts and their causes, which will be used in order to design a booklet with infographics about the myths and stereotypes around refugees.
The project will be implemented with the active involvement of UNOY and its member organizations in Europe, with PATRIR having a crucial role. UNITED network members will also be an important partners for the mapping process. The beneficiaries of the project will be the refugees and the local communities around their relocation and resettlement. At a later stage, the results of this project will be used for an advocacy campaign and be presented in the aforementioned forum.
Our idea is diversified from most ideas due to its implementation of Knowledge Triangle (research, education, innovation). Our consortium, with deep-rooted experience on Culture of Peace, Conflict Resolution and Antiracism, focusing on field grassroot research using open-source online mapping platforms provides our unique perspective. Furthermore, its correlation with the aforementioned forum contributes to further dissemination and continuation through a wider scope.
Funding requested from Advocate Europe
We foresee that the major expenses of the project will be on personnel costs (focused on coordination, research, administrative work). Due to the paneuropean distribution of the project and the involvement of the numerous organizations the expected personnel budget its quite considerable, roughly around 40.000 euros. We also expect expenses for office and materials (1.500 euros), IT support (2.500 euros), public relation and dissemination (3.500 euros) and designing of the booklet (1.000 euros)
Due to the nature of the project all feedback is more than welcomed. We would like to receive comments regarding the preparatory, the implementation and the follow up phases. Moreover, the assistance of individuals or organizations is more than gladly received.
