Idea pitch

We will build conversation and space for displaced and migrating artists in galleries, theatres, online and in networks. We will create a site where artists can come together to exchange skills and ideas about modes of production and politics. We will build and manage a digital platform which will ‘match-make’ artist’s across borders making difficult connections possible. We will commission collaborations to open up debate on migration, exchange through use of modern technologies.

Why does Europe need your idea?

As artists migrate from conflict zones to the European mainland they are faced with a real lack of opportunity to exhibit their works to an audience with a greater reach than the localized platforms where the work can only be discussed in conjunction with discussions on ‘war’ or ‘refugees’. This will also allow an opportunity for an exchange of ideas or skills not present within this current framework helping displaced artists overcome the difficulties of e.g. language and technology.

What is your impact?

When artists want to respond to events they will have place they can come to. We will initiate collaborations looking at migration. Success will be building a cohort of artists across Europe who are learning about each other’s differences and challenges and utilizing them in order to help them find new paths and solutions within their own work and practice. The long term impact will to support artists to provide different reflections from their communities and offer places for new voices.

How do you get there?

We will work with a designer to build and design the platform. We will translate this into the languages of our partners; German, English, Arabic and Turkish. We will build a skills exchange section compassing; loaning equipment, meeting new people, to exchanging skills (such as in editing) as well as areas to publish art works and showcase collaborative artworks. Each partner organisation on the team will leverage their artist networks to populate this site. We will employ a project manager dedicated to initiating and matchmaking collaborations This role can also develop opportunities for the partner organisations working on the premise that our goal is trigger conversations. 6.Our project manager role will be roaming to widen the reach in London, Berlin, Istanbul and Athens (Documenta).

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

Artists. We want artists to drive and design institutions and feel there is work to do around encouraging artist-led shared learning to create more diversity. Collaboration is the place to start and want to create conversations with these artists, especially those who are capitalising on digital modes of production to develop their work. In an ad hoc way artists already use these networks to overcome language issues, navigate new ideas, our project is to encourage and do more of this.

What makes your idea stand apart?

Migration and its effect on Europe are currently being discussed from many perspectives; geo-political, social, economic but no-one is currently reflecting on the problems from a different perspective. We will create, for artists, the freedom to discuss, comment & report on the situation as it affects them & to help to foster hope for change. We are creating a space which addresses migration but is based on the mutual challenges faced by artists as way to create understanding and transparency.
