We facilitate temporary settlements across Europe for itinerant visual artists; mobile ateliers, busses and caravans create Villages in which artists can unfold freely and involve and inspire locals. The Villages are connected by a growing traveling exhibition, connecting Europe along its itinerary.
Italy, Balkans, Romania
High quality visual art should move closer to Europe's people. In contrast to other programs, Nomadic Village does not produce 'outreach-like' simple art, but mediates sophisticated works through professionals and informal settings (e.g. coffee & cake around the exhibition-caravan whilst people can have a chat with the artists).
Besides being open to visual artists, the project also welcomes sociologists, anthropologists and hackers.
With the support of Advocate Europe we want to set the groundwork to make the Nomadic Villages and the traveling exhibition a continuous program for the next years, with a focus on fostering stronger connections and exchange within the central European region.
During the last year the project has seen a lot of compromises due to financial restrictions. In UK in 2012, in France in 2013 and in Austria in 2014 we could realize one Village each, but the traveling exhibition as well as other aspects (esp. GPS based tracking of the artists that are part of the network) could never be realized.
We will dedicate the funding from Advocate Europe to realize these aspects, and to feed the artists.
May – October 2015 we will take the following steps:
-Setting up two Nomadic Villages in Slovenia and Austria (finding a place, setting up infrastructure like electricity, kitchen, wireless internet, running water, toilets)
-touring the traveling exhibition (spontaneous stops in small villages as well as programmed visits to cities and art centers)
-connecting Europe through real (physical) mobility & presence (our itinerary includes old and new EC countries, and countries that haven't joined the community)
-tracking the participating artists on a shared digital map (enabling the artists to locate each other while on the road; visualising mobility across Europe)
-deepening the partnerships (for 2017 we plan to devise a program that will be eligible for the Creative Europe funding strand)
