Associação Cozinha Popular
Food as a universal language creates an extraordinary opportunity for interactions within tomorrow’s Europe, including migrants and transnational newcomers. Let's set an inclusive table, celebrating diversity, stimulating unusual encounters and practice, making Lisbon Europe’s oven and food garden.
Portugal has become a transitory country for flows of migrant peoples, the dynamic of impermanence generating spaces of non-encounters. The rise of extreme right-wing political parties in Europe, spreading racist and xenophobic discourse, participate in maintaining active segregation and exclusion. Historical city-centers are subjected to gentrification, marginalizing low-income populations. This project tackles socio-environmental issues from a holistic perspective, relying on the care of people, the earth, and the return of surplus. Every social actor operating in European micro-cosmos is crucial for strengthening a sense of belonging in uncertain times. The idea is simple and can be easily replicated anywhere in Europe.
THE OVEN has the potential to create an overwhelming sense of community. A shared future in Europe starts at the local level, bringing together people who cohabit the same physical space, never actually interacting. Using a bottom-up approach, THE OVEN cultivates diversity on the plate and in society, creating a sustainable, happy urban lifestyle for thousands of people.
Our aim is for people to follow this model, creating similar living laboratories, community kitchens and food gardens, inspiring similar actions in their own neighborhoods and cities.
We hope to create a trend of resilient communities based on conviviality, diversity and cooperation across Europe, of transnational meeting points for numerous communities.
We will invite the public to take an active part in setting the platform for the encounters: building the outdoor community kitchen, lab and oven; preparing and cultivating the food gardens. Stimulating synergies, we will invite guests from all over Europe to join us (chefs, gardeners, ecologists, musicians, artists, urbanists, activists, etc.), share practices and experiences during the year: creating 12 teams in residence THE OVEN will run an ongoing public program with diverse activities: baking classes, barbecues, mobile kitchens, preserving workshops, planting and seeding, parliaments at the table, jam sessions and trouble shooting.
An editorial team will announce and document the program via wallpapers, blogs and social media with an open agenda, recipes, and participatory tools.
