Idea pitch

What if the entire continent of Europe were turned into a theme park and you were the last surviving European kept for tourists to gawk at? By taking us to a future where Europe as the common project it is today doesn’t exist anymore, this theatre piece shows us what we have and are about to lose.

Where will your idea take place?

London, United Kingdom, Paris, France, Berlin, Germany

Why does Europe need your idea?

This theatre project is meant to make the audience nostalgic for something that still exists, something they still have and thus make the audience re-contextualise and value what they have. In this case, what they have is the common European project, which is frequently neglected and unfairly blamed and whose merits are rarely acknowledged even if they are plain to see.

This is an important point to make in the UK where the relationship with Europe is slipping away. But not only there. Even though we begin the project in the UK, we aim to take it further and tour it in other countries of the EU.

The current rise of nationalist parties in Europe, including UKIP in the UK, makes this investigation into our common history and, hopefully, our common future feel absolutely necessary.

What is your impact?

The successful outcomes of our endeavour would be:

1. a theatre show (The Last European) that tours the UK and other countries of the European Union
2. the creation of a theatre company (Neon Boneyard) engaged in making political points through storytelling and the use of innovative aesthetics
3. we'd like to see, especially in the UK, a reconsideration of the value of the European project by the audience as a consequence of the show and the open debates organised around its themes
4. we'd like to see, especially in the UK, a swing away from extremism, isolationism, and political fragmentation and towards communication and a focus on making things better, as opposed to finding faults and blaming them on the European Union

How do you get there?

We will start establishing our theatre company Neon Boneyard as a non-profit/charity organisation in May 2015.

We will keep working on the script throughout the summer of 2015. We will engage designers (we are missing a light and a sound designer) in June and July 2015 and finalise the designs (set, video, lights, sound, etc.) in September and October 2015. We will cast the show in November and December 2015. Then we will rehearse the show in January and February 2016. We will premiere the show in March 2016 and run it for 4 weeks in London alongside a programme of open meetings and debates.

In parallel with all this work, we will spend September 2015 to April 2016 making plans and partnerships for touring and then we will start touring in May 2016.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

We'd like to test where outside the UK this show idea would be of interest. We'd also like to use this online community in order to start building a network and infrastructure of partnerships so we can take our theatre project on tour.
