Idea pitch

For the first time Budva, with 19,218 inhabitants, will initiate a pioneering project aimed at tackling food wastage. We propose the first “solidarity fridge”, in which residents, bakeries, and restaurants can drop off leftover or unused food otherwise destined for the bin. Anything left in the fridge can be picked up by anyone who wants it.

Where does your idea take place?

Budva Municipality, Montenegro.

Why does Europe need your idea?

For addressing the challenges of democracy in Europe, we propose bottom-up movements. The food wastage control will enable us to introduce social inclusion and propose sharing of food with all members of society.

What is your impact?

A year from now, we will have a movement of ecological assessment of our food consumption. This will lower the footprint of all citizens in Budva Municipality. Furthermore, it will positively influence our tourists to participate in our project and bring the lessons back to their country.

How do you get there?

We plan to place three large refrigerators in different locations in the city, which are easily accessible to everyone. The location and purpose of these refrigerators will be advertised in local newspapers, TV programs, and social networks such as Face-book, Twitter, and Instagram. During this campaign, we will introduce the public to idea of sharing leftover or unused food not as a charity, but as ecological and social responsibility.

What is your story?

During my Ph.D. studies, I went through the period of poverty. This phase of my life enabled me to personally experience food deprivation. In the same time, living from leftovers from neighbors, I witnessed how much food is wasted in our society. This project tackles the issue of food management.

Who are you doing it for?

The target groups are the middle and low-income households in Budva. For realizing this project the main stakeholders are local restaurants, hotels, and well-off households. This project enables lower income households to level with better off and provide healthier social relationship.
