Refugees deserve to have their voices heard in policy discussions about their futures. In partnership with UN Refugee Agency, ID launched the Refugee Coalition for Europe to stake a claim for refugees to have a seat at the table of European refugee policy-making. The aim of the coalition – a group of refugee leaders living in Europe – is to increase social-inclusion by engaging with local, municipal and European governments to shape refugee policy for the better.
Seven member states: Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy & Sweden
The coalition will demonstrate to citizens and policymakers that refugees have agency and want to be part of shaping a more just and democratic Europe. Increased refugee responsibility-sharing and participation in European policymaking will improve social inclusion and combat rising xenophobia.
European refugee policy will reflect the legitimate rights and needs of refugees. Through increased participation in policy-making, refugees will no longer be seen as threats or token victims but instead as direct contributors to building a more democratic Europe.
The Refugee Coalition for Europe was formed in December 2017. With funding, the Coalition will:
• Cross-fertilize best practices with local authorities and improve refugee access to information, opportunities, and basic needs in partnership and inter-governmental institutions;
• Build a coalition of local authorities to address legal obstacles for refugees at the national and EU levels;
• Advocate against racism and the manipulation of refugee issues;
• Mainstream human rights values.
ID works inside the diplomatic system to ensure that all parties have a seat at the negotiating table. Refugees deserve to shape the policies that will impact their futures, it is the only way to effectively develop their self-reliance and reduce their dependency on their host communities.
For refugees across Europe and their host communities. The refugees in the coalition aim to bring about systemic change, ensuring participation at the municipal level which will, in turn, benefit other marginalized communities and EU citizens at the national and EU levels.
Sharing, discussing, and developing ideas is the bedrock of innovation and acts as a catalyst to drive change. We welcome suggestions on how we can improve the effectiveness of the Refugee for coalition Europe project.
