Idea pitch

The project aims to give young Syrian refugees a voice through photography. It seeks to foster a culture of dialogue by enabling Syrians to upload pictures about their situation in Europe on an online platform and to use photography for self-expression and communication in workshops and exhibitions.

Where will your idea take place?

Germany, Bulgaria, Turkey

Why does Europe need your idea?

Intercultural dialogue has to play an important role with regards to Europe’s future. It enables us to develop an understanding of diverse perspectives and establish common ground between different cultures. Syrian refugees will be encouraged to contribute their own images and views. By encountering diverse perspectives, refugees and non-refugees will be encouraged to connect on an individual level, regardless of political and religious affiliations. Interpersonal discussions contribute to fostering mutual understanding and the feeling of belonging together. The project challenges a fortress Europe mentality, promotes a culture of civil dialogue, guided above all by tolerance, and cultural pluralism, which are fundamental for a joint future for Syrian civilians as well as for Europe.

What is your impact?

Syria on the Move aims to give agency and a voice to young Syrian refugees, and actively engage them to inform others about their situation in exile through photography. Our project aims to build capacity of refugees and help them to overcome their trauma by using photography for self-expression and communication. Bringing their perspective closer to a European audience, the project seeks to raise awareness and understanding of the current situation of refugees and thus helps to create a dialogue between Syrians and host communities throughout Europe. By doing so, the project aims to combat rising islamophobia and deconstruct existing stereotypes and assumptions as well as to work towards a more nuanced view of identity and its expression, that challenge the labeling of refugees.

How do you get there?

We will implement the website together with Syrian programmers. The design will be developed in a comprehensive way to assure that it targets a diverse audience. The website will be actively promoted by our partners and via a media campaign and Social Media.

The two-week photography workshops in each project country will gather 15 Syrians (16-26 years). The focus is on identity-related issues while participants gain new skills in photography. The workshop has its basis on the methodology of participatory photography developed by the organization Photovoice.

The results of the workshops will be shown in exhibitions. Each participant will showcase up to 5 pieces thus developing his own photography story. The target audience will be reached via a media campaign, through partner’s network.

In 2013, SocialVisions successfully implemented the collective mobilization project Blasti - C’est ma place in Tunisia. Blasti was focused on enhancing dialogue between women from different backgrounds. The concept of Syria on the Move is based on the experiences of Blasti.
