Idea Sketch

Idea pitch

Across Europe, post-industrial spaces have been abandoned or exploited by private interests in unsustainable and non participatory ways with long-term negative effects. In response, we want to explore the question of: How can post-industrial spaces be transformed in a participatory multistakeholder process to benefit the communities? Our plan is to initiate a collective inquiry followed up by an intervention of reclaiming one such space for community use in a participatory and sustainable way.

Where will your idea take place?

Vanadzor, Lori region Armenia and North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Why does Europe need your idea?

In the age of decreased citizen engagement and disconnect from the European idea, this project actively addresses concerns of citizen participation and vivid local democracy in 3 different countries by focusing on the reuse of post-industrial spaces for community benefit.

What is your impact?

We have explored the process of reclaiming post-industrial spaces in a participatory multistakeholder process.Target group has increased knowledge and skills through transforming one such space in a participatory and sustainable way. Wider public has access to read and replicate this experience.

How do you get there?

We want to critically investigate the use of post-industrial spaces for public benefit together with stakeholders from multiple sectors
Collective exploration through fieldwork and a multidisciplinary study visit to the Ruhr area
Collective intervention design co-created in a youth and local government forum
Explorative community intervention in a community site to be identified in the process Documentation of the process and publication on different platforms, potentially CityToolBox

What is your story?

Armenian team had an opportunity to visit Kitev in Oberhausen and Landschaftspark in Duisburg, which was an inspirational moment and a chance to thing of same unused post-industrial spaces in Armenia. Thus the idea was born to learn from each other and explore jointly the process.

Who are you doing it for?

Target group: youth in post-industrial communities and local governments, project partner organizations
Beneficiaries: citizens of such areas, the target groups of partner organizations
Stakeholders: experts in community engagement, participatory planning, sustainable housing, youth engagement.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

We very much look forward to receiving your open and honest criticism; references to best practices in similar fields; ideas for improvement and support. Thanks for your time!
