Idea pitch

Boosting voter turnout and political participation among young European voters for the European Parliament elections 2019. Involving young and first time voters in civic election observation opens new opportunities for active participation in the electoral processes. Based on innovative voter education, its observation findings and reform recommendations serve as common ground for advocacy with European/national legislators and for the modernization of European democratic processes.

Where does your idea take place? in Austria and like-minded initiatives in EU member states (PL, SK, ROM, GER)

Why does Europe need your idea?

This initiative creates a better understanding of the EU’s electoral practices and improves electoral knowledge among young & first time voters. The EU’s democratic practices improve through citizen observers' recommendations and reform advocacy in their countries.

What is your impact?

Political participation and knowledge of electoral procedures among first time voters; active citizen involvement in electoral reform; modernization and further development of Europe’s democratic standards through citizens’ advocacy in comparison with international standards.

How do you get there?

Network meetings aiming at the creation of advocacy groups for citizen election observation and advocacy on electoral reforms. Development of a social media app for voter education and civic election observation. Training of trainers to conduct voter education workshops in schools and universities. Meetings with members of national / European parliament(s) to present and discuss findings.

What is your story?

Democracy in Europe cannot be taken for granted. As experienced international election experts, we are convinced how citizen participation through election observation and voter education can strengthen democratic practices and ownership. We aim at bringing this knowledge “back home” to Europe.

Who are you doing it for?

Our primary target group is first time voters ahead of the 2019 European Parliament elections in selected EU member states with like-minded organisations. EU member state governments are equally targeted to implement international recommendations and best democratic practices.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

We believe in the cross-fertilization of ideas and are grateful for constructive feed back. We are interested to exchange knowledge and lessons learned with partners in Europe and are looking for expertise in the development of social media tools for voter education and civic monitoring.
