SoundCamp is a series of outdoor listening events on International Dawn Chorus Day, linked by Reveil: a 24 hour broadcast of the sounds of daybreak, relayed live by audio streamers around the globe.

Sound is sometimes neglected in favour of visual media. Our project focuses on the value of close listening and technical and artistic practices that support it.
The live audio field is a cutting edge area in sound studies, in which SoundCamp is engaged. Additional funding for workshops will allow participants to take advantage of affordable DIY approaches to live streaming audio as a way of engaging with this field in a distinctive, environmentally engaged way.
These tools can be used by a range of diverse communities, including young people, since they provide an engaging ecological-technical mix.
We aim to create a new listenership for live audio streaming, and build collaborations between UK and international activists working in urban and rural places.
Working towards the 2016 broadcast, we will use additional funding to deliver workshops introducing participants to new ways of listening by setting up portals for live streaming audio (using open source software based on the portable and compact Raspberry Pi mini computer, extending platforms provided by Locus Sonus and others).
We will donate this technology to interested activists who currently do not have the means to participate. We particularly wish to extend the broadcasting network to areas such as former industrial sites, under represented parts of Eastern Europe and the Global South.
Workshops will take place between September 2015 and April 2016. The Reveil broadcast will be scheduled in accordance with International Dawn Chorus Day, May 2016.
