Idea pitch

Through food related activities we will promote tolerance and cohesion. We work with the idea of food and the activities surrounding it, bearing also social meaning besides providing nutrition to our bodies. Our events will serve as a natural platform to exchange knowledge on culinary traditions, consumption and production patterns, or lifestyles in general. Through something common to all of us, we will have the opportunity to identify and understand further similarities among diverse groups.

Where will your idea take place?

Regions of Slovakia

Why does Europe need your idea?

Eastern European countries are generally reluctant to accept otherness of various kind. It is often the fear of the unknown that lies at the root of the negative attitudes towards different communities. These sentiments have intensified recently in the context of the refugee crisis. The problem of social cohesion and inclusion in EE goes hand-in-hand with the lack of interest and participation in public life, stemming from the limited awareness regarding the civic rights and responsibilities.

What is your impact?

Over the long run, our aim is to enhance social cohesion in Slovakia and to contribute towards more open and inclusive society, while stimulating active participation in public life. By facilitating contacts between diverse communities with the main focus on youth, we will aim to eliminate fears, suspicions and stereotypes, therefore improving their mutual understanding and strengthening social ties and cohesion within the society.

How do you get there?

We will use food as the main tool to connect people, foster linkages among different groups and ultimately to enhance cohesion within our society. We will achieve this by bringing people in the context where cooperation is required (cooking, gardening) and through awareness raising on the food issues that goes beyond the life of an individual. We will reach out to young people of diverse groups and encourage them to participate in various (intercultural) events, such as cooking and gardening exchanges or food film screenings followed by discussions and farm visits. To further stimulate their active participation, a micro-grant scheme will be launched to provide financial support for the most interesting and creative project ideas presented by the youth.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

The youth of different backgrounds (locals, migrants, Roma communities etc.) will be our main target group. Young leaders across the country will be encouraged to participate in the project events that will take place in all of the 7 cultural and administrative regions of Slovakia. These young people will themselves become multipliers of project results by actively spreading the new insights among their peers through their own (small) projects and awareness raising activities.

What makes your idea stand apart?

We work with the idea of food and the activities surrounding it, bearing also social meaning besides providing nutrition to our bodies. Preparing food requires us to pay attention to particular ingredients, to think about flavors, combinations, stories behind it - it makes us aware that it is a part of something. Eating or even gardening together will provide us with invaluable time to talk, share and listen, thus creating a perfect opportunity for becoming closer in a very natural setting.
