Idea pitch

Happiness is the ultimate pursuit of any human being. In daily rush we often forget that there are more things uniting than dividing us. WMTH will let you discover what makes firemen and businesswoman happy, Spaniards in Latvia and Romanians in Belgium, men and women, kids and pensioners. We will go around Europe collecting stories of human happiness to display that, despite any perceived cultural, racial or geographical divides, it's the same small things in daily life that make us all happy.

Our goal is to collect stories from at least 20 countries

Why does Europe need your idea?

Firstly, one of the biggest bottlenecks in building an inclusive society is prejudices, cliches and assumptions. High awareness about feelings, thoughts and values of other social groups is a fundamental block for starting to build bridges within and across countries. Secondly, unawareness about personal happiness leads to high depression levels and suicide rates, despite high level of economic development of European countries.

What is your impact?

In one year What Makes Them Happy should become the biggest collection of European citizen happiness stories across the continent. Story collection should take place at least in 20 European countries during the span of 10 months. Our presence on streets of European cities and across social media should get the question "What makes you happy?" in front of eyes of 500 000 people.

How do you get there?

The collection of stories will take place in three steps. First, to set the format of happiness stories, it is essential to go around target countries in person. We will personally collect stories from strangers on the streets of major European cities talking about what makes them happy. Express coaching and NLP techniques will be applied to maximize reflective processes during our conversations. Second, to make the concept scalable and sustainable, we will pursue local partnerships to continue local story collection. Local partners will be provided with training and coaching from our side on express coaching techniques. Third, once the website has enough of traction across countries, crowdsourcing of user-generated stories will become the major source of story collection.

What is your story?


Who are you doing it for?

There are two major target groups for this project. First, social groups suffering from social discrimination - from refugees to sexual minorities. Second, people with mild to medium symptoms of depression stemming from lack of awareness about and appreciation of personal happiness.

What makes your idea stand apart?

This project is built on fundamental principles of positive psychology and positive inquiry - emerging techniques for fostering positive social change. Triggering positive reflective thinking and focusing on the common goal of happiness pursuit create a strong emotional bond for a more open society. Apart from the awareness aspect, the project will bring practical benefit to partner organizations through the training program and to respondents through express coaching on the city streets.

Major expenses

Two major expenses are linked with this project: travelling across Europe for collecting stories (20000 EUR) and development and promotion of the story platform (5000 EUR).
