The Center for Garbage Studies
The Center for Garbage Studies represents a community driven platform for knowledge and experience sharing in finding sustainable solutions regarding waste issues. Through five concepts: Rethink, Reconnect, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (5Rs), the Center will engage, encourage and inspire people to take action for change. The Center will be a starting point not only for creating and acquiring ideas but also for their practical implementation.
Incoherent formal policies and procedures regarding waste management in Serbia hinder already obvious problem as waste. Linear system leaves loads of garbage in overfilled and mismanaged landfills, while recycles only 10%. Ignorance, poverty, lack of citizen involvement enforce our challenge to identifying and establishing a prototype of influence thus social actors and stakeholders would be encouraged to contribute in addressing waste issues and develop more sustainable waste lifecycle.
The project is aiming to be holistic and long lasting sharing platform within the society. In a year, the Center for Garbage Studies is an established organization with the team that is knowledgeable and recognized as a relevant actor in the field. The program and activities are developed with special focus on 5Rs concept so that each has its own process of implementation relying on a strong and dynamic network of local, regional and international participants, institutions and organizations.
1. Network building
The Center will continue mapping of good practices by developing collaboration with the relevant organizations. The Center will host experts from Europe who will enable team and community to learn from them and their practice.
2. Launching of the Center for Garbage Studies
The Center will be situated on permanent basis and will design and manage programs for its members and visitors. The specific set of activities will be determined as to offer the most efficient solutions for the each of the 5Rs program.
3. Online knowledge sharing platform
The Center will develop its interactive platform as useful community information source. It will be interactive and open to suggestions and discussion making it more approachable, democratic tool for a dialogue on wider level.
The dialog and solutions initiated at the Center for Garbage Studies will have the purpose to benefit the wider society and the urban environment of all. Youth are particularly very important target group and we intend to include them as an ambassador and enabler of behavioral change in the society. Other important participants are governmental organizations and institutions, non-governmental organizations, waste management companies, producers, recyclers and other relevant initiatives.
Our project idea presents unique platform that strives to connect very fragmented waste management ecosystem and establish strong common voice to address its problems. It tackles all steps in waste cycle, not just most popular or solvable, and considers its macro and micro levels equally. Additionally, this concept of holistic and comprehensive approach to specific subject can be applied in other areas of interest as well in other cities and countries.
