How many places we look at today as sources of embarrassment could be recognized as a
world cultural heritage tomorrow? Why should we be ashamed by architecture or parts of cities today? What are the contemporary relations between shame and architecture /cities /places in Europe? Is shame a tool for top down control in planning cities? Starting from Matera's unique history, where yesterday places of shame are today proud, we want to trigger a international dialogue on ethics & politics today.
Think about shame and cities/architecture as a theme around which Europe can better understand today and yesterday way of think on realtionships between places and communities. That theme will help to recognize right and wrong directions in planning places development and to consider inner and not-yet-recognized beauties.
Matera is a kind of unique example where places of shame became Unesco World Heritage and il 2019 will be a central part for de ECoC. We want to share this story to think about the presente and the future. This occasion could be an example for the rest of Europe and for the world to better look at the everydaylife beauty and to the power of communities to create culture and beauty.
Three directions: talk about, design and communicate in non verbal languages, archive, make available information and share.
Talk: international meetings where interdisciplinary work (architecture, politics, sociology, anthropology, economy..) will atlk about their point of view in relation between shame and cities/architecture.
Work of art and architecture for the public space where the same topic will be discussed using projects, public art, social design.
Discussions and public works will be archived into a multimedia center which will be available by internet.
We are spreading the topic alla around Europe, starting the center looking for a documentation place, creating a web of interest, looking for other organizations and projects in Europe which will be interested to share the path with us.
We want to talk about something positive using something else which has been negative. We would like to create an European and International "psychoanalytic session" to share what we should not be ashamed an what instead should start to consider as shame.
