SINGA is a movement that uses community building and tech innovation to welcome, connect and learn from refugees to strengthen society. We do so by creating on- and offline platforms for refugees and local citizens to meet and co-create projects based on common interests and professional backgrounds. Starting in Paris in 2012, SINGA has succeeded in building a community of 20 000 people, incubating projects and generating friendships to build the society of tomorrow. Let’s make SINGA European!
France, Germany, Belgium
Despite government support, a wide socio-economic gap continues to separate refugees from local citizens. Furthermore insufficient programs are in place to enable refugees to become financially and socially independent long-term. Factors attributing to this include language barriers and access to necessary information and professional networks. SINGA addresses these barriers by mobilising community resources to support entrepreneurial collaborations.
The chances and challenges presented by the current migratory processes in Europe require a supra-national perspective. Our aim is to lay the basis for a European SINGA Network in France, Germany and Belgium that innovates together, turns the creative potential emerging from forced immigration into tangible programs, and regularly exchanges best-practices. Being selected would not only permit a stronger tri-national cooperation but would also enable us to scale our impact to a European level.
1) We want to establish an institutional structure for SINGA in Belgium, where a strong team is currently taking the first steps on a voluntary basis. They need financial support to organise the first social and language events, spread the word about SINGA and build a community. 2) SINGA Deutschland will strengthen their project incubation structure for socio-cultural, civic and entrepreneurial projects from within the community, including individual consulting, training and exchanges in the SINGA network. 3) We will strengthen the ties among the European SINGA network by undertaking transnational projects such as VIA, a train carrying SINGA’s entrepreneurs through Europe, a joint hackathon and many others. For their coordination, we will establish a position in France and Germany each.
SINGA’s target groups include newcomers and locals who would like to meet in social settings, exchange language or skills and/or co-create entrepreneurial projects. Other stakeholders include civil society organisations, public institutions and private companies that are encouraged to engage beyond financial support, by involving their employees in our activities. Ultimately, the long-term beneficiary of SINGA’s activities is the society at large in which it operates.
