Association Hors Pistes
Hors Pistes initiates creative exchanges which allow designers to discover traditional craftsmanship and craftsmen to value their know-how by diversifying their application fields.
The next collaborative residency will be held in Greenland and will involve inuit craftsmen and European designers. This project questions Inuit heritage and future.
Hors Pistes draws lines between the making and the cultures, investigates know-how and breaks down the barriers between otherwise partitioned approaches
In Greenland, Inuit life has changed significantly over the two last generations. The traditionnal nomadic lifestyle (moving from one place to another with the seasons, hunting and fishing) and inuit mithology barely still exist. Same thing happens to the traditionnal craft technics such as kayak making, sealskin craftsmanship, stone and bone carving,... wich are disapearing.
HP aims to connect threatened crafts traditions with young creators within Europe trough multidisciplinary workshops.
Our goal is to create a creative network within Europe trough effective encounters and collaborations between different professions and cultures. We aim to define a new and human way to collaborate to create and produce daily life objets based on experience.
We strongly believe that traditionnal craft can actively participate to social and economical development. We want to preserve it not only because it is part of history but also because it can contribute to building the future.
During one month in Greenland, 6 designers (French, Danish, Belgian, Swiss,..) and 6 Inuit craftsmen will work together, share knowledge, mix their technics and cultures. They will try to understand each other culture as well as finding new applications to traditional crafts and creating objects.
A photographer, a graphic designer and an ethnologist will document the workshop. They will collaborate to conceive a book describing the Inuit lifestyle changes in Greenland as well as the results of the collaborations between designers and craftsmen.
The objects resulting from the workshop will then be presented in several exhibitions in Greenland, Denmark, France and all over Europe. Trough those exhibitions, we'll enable a wide audience to discover Inuit crafts as a part of European culture
This new Hors Pistes workshop will benefit to the participants (craftsmen, designers, photogaphers, graphic designers, ethnologist). It will allow them to renew their practice by the encounter of different cultures and life experiences.
We also build this project for Inuit communities, to help them preserving and valuing their traditionnal knowledges.
Last and not least, we are doing this project for any European to have a new perspective on objects and on Inuit Culture as a part of Europe.
Our idea is based on a human experience, and human encounters.
It begins by stepping out of our habits to meet and understand a different culture.
We are creating a laboratory to reinvent ways of working together and creating, to renew the creation processes by mixing the cultures and the knowledges.
