Idea pitch

The overall theme is "home" – "Heimat", which gives a field of many interesting differences and similarities of the different cultures. The participants will meet at four workshops, where they will prepare four art performances. These have different means of expression: painting, movement/dance, music and taste. There will be four public performances and an art exhibition with drawings, video-, soundinstallation and finally a celebration. This will happen in different cities. They connect.

Where will your idea take place?

Hannover, Germany

Why does Europe need your idea?

Integration can only work when both sides meet. The great challenge is to get to know each other and create bonds. Fear, predjudice, uncertainty and ignorance are the obsticals to overcome. We want to enable the people to comunicate at eyelevel and express their culture freely. Refugees are mostly seen as a burden. Through the eyes of an artist they are a big inrichment. This needs more response in european press. The networking between institutions/helpers needs the refreshing power of art.

What is your impact?

We want to transform these artprojects into a great european movement. There will have been 12 performances and 3 exhibitions in Hameln, Hannover and Essen. Preparations in Gent and Bristol started. The encreasing number of groups will be combined in an anual great festival. These events will create a new view on refugees in press and public, a new networking between cities, institutions, the participating groups/members and a longlasting understanding of the different cultures/integration.

How do you get there?

This project was very successfully realised in Hameln ( We take it as a rolemodel: We find an exhibitionroom. Looking for the participants we contact various institutions as DRK, refugee shelters, church, Language schools, youth centers, social workers, volunteer initiative groups and offices for the refugees. For the locals we contact parties, labor unions and make it public in the press. We present the project at various events of these. There will be Flyers, Posters, a homepage with a blog and a facebook page. In the workshops up to 60 people work in small, mixed groups and also the whole group works together. Everyone can express oneself without fear. A concept from prof. Artists brings the parts together into a convincing and touching peace of performance art.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

Our target group for participants are refugees and local people who are interested in getting to know people from the other culture/art. Every citizen can watch the public performances and the exibition. Visitors are to be found among the donators, the network aroused during the planing of the project (see above) and art interested people as local artists. Friends and relatives of the refugees in their home countries can follow all activities on facebook and the website/blog.

What makes your idea stand apart?

The central idea of performance art is being authentic. Being authentic needs no special skills and is accessible to everyone. The concept can be realised in every city, for all culture areas, provokes a dialogue at eye level and overcomes isolation/prejudices. Special is the multidisciplinarity of artistic expressions which enables to get a sensual access to the theme “Home” beyond linguistic barriers. Public performances and exhibition strengthen people to face integration in everyday life.
