Cycling is one of the most efficient and carbon free vehicle in urban areas. Having in mind that over 70% of world population is living in urban areas, bicycle is the most sustainable way of transport for urban population. By increasing bicycle usage it will be increased air quality, reduced pulmonary and heart diseases, it will have influence on costs of life by increasing working productivity, social gathering of people, money savings. It will improve the quality of life in urban areas.
The overall objective of the project is to affect the increase of public participation in development and implementation of strategic plans in local communities. Project aims, to integrate experience of local officials and CSOs interested in the implementation of cycling policies on local level. It will set foundations for development of future Cyclists Advocacy Network in BiH and establish a regional cooperation in the field of cycling transport.
The expected outcome of the project will contain a critical review of the transport policies in five municipalities in BiH as well as recommendation from CSOs how to integrate cycling into transport policies. A comparative analysis of cycling policies will provide information which municipalities are leading in the implementation of cycling policies in order to set standards for the further implementation of policies in this area. Research results will be part of brochure and position paper. The brochure will be promoted at the final conference, at which all stakeholders will be present. One of the activities of the project is also celebration of European mobility week where local CSOs will have promotion of the car-free campaign and will open a bicycle parking’s in their cities.
The main target group are CSOs, which promote cycling transportation. Local authorities should find more efficient mechanisms through exchange of experience from other countries and cities and improve their transport policies in a way that they are more focused and adjusted for the needs of citizens and CSOs that promote a sustainable transport ideas and the healthy environment. Beneficiaries are citizens of five municipalities covered by the project.
BiH is facing strong economy and political crisis, and most of the projects are too unrealistic and supposed to solve major problems, but with no results. We believe that will re-learn people to move forward and to advocate their needs. Cycling is activity that requires active approach . As Albert Einstein once stated “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”
