Idea Sketch | Proposal

Proposal

Idea pitch

The European Citizens' Initiative could be a powerful institution to empower participation in Europe. But the process to launch an initiative is complicated. In some European Countries, you have to provide your ID number, in others you don't. The committee has to collect 1.000.000 signatures and reach a given quorum in one out of four countries of the EU - all within one year. Our smartphone app will facilitate this difficult process and help initiatives to more likely become successful.

Where will your idea take place?

Whole Europe

Why does Europe need your idea?

Barriers to launch an European Citizens Initative are high: You must collect 1.000.000 signatures in several European countries, within one year. The text of the initiative must be approved beforehand by the EU Commission. Once approved, the text cannot be changed any more. Aiming a successful initiative seems beyond reach.

Since 2012 55 initiatives have been proposed by citizens of the EU. Only 3 of them reached the goal of 1.000.000 signatures. No one ever was ratified by the EU parliament.

What is your impact?

We want to create a process for pre-launching an ECI that is disruptive, flexible, agile and permissionless. We are already creating a smartphone app that can help groups taking democratic decision. The app shall be usable within groups of friends, in the family, in enterprises or in the political field. We hope to launch a first simple prototype in May 2016. Our goal is to create a worldwide reference tool for making democratic decisions. Therefore we are cooperating with many groups worldwide.

How do you get there?

We want to enhance this app so that it facilitates the process to launch an European Citizen's Initative.

With our app, you shall be able to:
* make a suggestion for a new ECI
* make comments and suggest changes to a proposed ECI
* collaborate europe-wide on new ECI proposals
* declare your support for different proposals
* get a temperature check of how many people, in how many countries, are already supporting the proposal
* decide together, which proposal shall be the final version (vote for it)
* register the ECI officially *after* it has been broadly discussed, enhanced and is already supported by many people
* get a notification as soon as the ECI is officially registered and officially support the ECI within the app by simply approving your earlier decision.

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

We want to build a tool that motivates democracy and brings the power literally back into the hands of the people. With their smartphones, they can take a stance and express their opinions.

Our goal is to encourage as many people as possible to take part in the democratic process.

Like in the bitcoin technology, the whole decision process will take place decentralized and will be documented in the blockchain. This means the protocol is owned by nobody - or - vice versa - by everybody.

What makes your idea stand apart?

Open source. Cooperation, not concurrence

We want our app to be broadly accepted as a tool for democratic participation. We cooperate with as many groups as possible. All code that we are writing is open source and owned by the public.

Design thinking

To create a User experience that is really disruptive and smart. We focus on a broad design thinking process and take in rich user feedback at any stage of our project.
