interaction Leipzig e. V.
Interaction wants to instigate a touring museum - an art exhibition with programmed events in public spaces. The museum will showcase art works and performances by refugees from across Europe. As a touring museum, it will travel to different countries and cities in Europe. The exhibition will explore refugee perspectives on contemporary and future Europe. Through European Encounters we aim to provide an important opportunity for refugees to be recognised and listened to.
Leipzig / different cities across Europe
Refugee issues tend to be discussed in the media and in public without hearing the voices of refugees. There are discussions about refugees but no discourse with them. Therefore these discussions tend to stigmatize or victimise refugees. This does not only affect the public perception but also social interactions within society.
Currently it is difficult for the majority of refugees to actively participate in social life. Language barriers and social exclusion are only two of the reasons.
We want to give refugees a platform to speak for themselves and to share their perspectives, expertise and talents. We want to give refugees a voice through art and performance. Our aim is to encourage greater understanding and to promote positive exchanges between different communities.
The touring exhibition will continiusly expand. This is just the starting point for a collection of contributions and ideas for a life-worthy, community-based Europe 2020.
We want to invite 25 artists and performers with a refugee background. The artists showing work and performing will live all over Europe and will be selected on an open call through our partner organisations across Europe. Partner organisations include i.e. Counterpoints Arts in London, UK, European Meeting Center Nowy Staw Foundation in Lublin, Poland and Consorzio SIS in Italy. We will organise and curate a contemporary art exhibition with local partners in Leipzig. After the first stop in Leipzig, we will tour with the “museum” at selected places where the participating artists are based. We will continously extend the exhibtion with the contributions we collect at the touring destinations.
We at interaction Leipzig e.V. are a group of people with and without refugee backgrounds. We work together to promote encounters on eye-level. Our focus is on working with refugees instead of offering a service to them. We set up events to bring together local communites with and without refugee backgrounds.
European Encounters is for the European public - we want to open up a long-term dialogue, create encounters and inspire artistic expression.
Refugees will actively be able to reprensent themselves. Through their art and performance they will be able to raise questions that matter to them. All we provide is a framework for these aritstic expressions.
We want to open up discussions which are crucial for Europe now and in 2020. We do not offer a preconseived solution but see our idea as an inclusive project that will grow with the touring of the museum.
We willl document our process and will make it accessible online for everybody.
