Idea pitch

If Shakespeare was alive, he would get much inspiration to shake European sphere again. His 400th death anniversary is marked by changes. Not only refugee crisis, but effects of economic crisis, bloom of right-wing nationalism, xenophobia, religious intolerance etc.– it is all challenging European values and unity. In the light of new circumstances, Shakespeare’s main motifs will be re-explored in a new theater play. 5 young directors will reinterpret him through the prism of contemporary Europe

Where will your idea take place?

Belgrade, Serbia

Why does Europe need your idea?

Political, socio-economic, cultural changes in Europe and the world permeate all aspects of European society. In the wake of growing xenophobia and right-wing populism, “fortress Europe” is not only building walls towards the outside world, but also in its interior. They seem to be mostly addressed by political aspects and less through culture. Even less through the lenses of young professionals from different countries who work together in the same goal– to give it its own view and react to it.

What is your impact?

A joint theater play will be presented to European audience in an engaging and thought-provoking way. The theater play will be on tour in at least five European capitals (of young directors’ countries), so it will in the same period raise the same questions in different cities. Following the example of this way of work, there will be more theater plays made by the same model, strongly intertwining European theater workers and audiences.

How do you get there?

We will organize a competition for young directors, who will be selected by the jury made of theater professionals. Online work on the development of the play with the selected directors. Exchanging their ideas and dividing work among them. Meeting in Belgrade to work on the play for 2-3 months. This work will include workshops for directors, adaptation of the scenario, selection of actors, and final production of the play. Constant filming of the process for the documentation of the work methods, for archives and promotion. The process finishes with the premiere of the play in one of Belgrade theaters. Post production part includes the tour around the directors’ cities and putting the play on the repertoire of one of Belgrade’s theaters.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

- Broad theater audience
- Engaged artists and cultural workers in Serbia, Balkans and Europe
- Young theater directors who will get the chance to work on this project now or in the future
- Theater managers and decision makers in cultural policies, who could continue to use the new model of joint European directing in order to strengthen cohesion in European cultural space
- Civil society organizations and politicians who work on strengthening European values and unity

What makes your idea stand apart?

Addressing issues in Europe through engaged art and culture, while bringing together young talents from very different countries. Five young directors will work together, countering their views of European society and Shakespeare’s role in it, and through the combination of different motifs and styles give as a brand new play. As a metaphor of Europe – together in diversity, 5 acts will comprise 1 theater play and find a common thread. Complement each other, while preserving their own uniqueness
