Idea pitch

We want to enrich the Jewish-Israeli culture days in Thuringia with workshops, puppet theater, guided tours for children, information stands and several free actions for a broad public during 4 weeks in 13 cities. With that we want to supplement the planned events that reach only people already interested in this religion – we want to bring the theme and the importance of tolerance for others to educationally disadvantaged groups.

Why does Europe need your idea?

Under the demonstrations against refugees, the slogans of more nationalistic parties, the fear of „Islamization“ more and more antisemtic statements are mixed. Prejudices against Jews come back, abuses can be heard in the streets – it again comes into practice to use antisemitism for political aims - especially in regions of Eatsern Germany. The strengthening of an anti-European nationalism finds one outlet in growing enmity against Jews. That is what we want to act against.

What is your impact?

We want to bring several thousand people in contact with jewish religion, tradition, culture and everyday life while coming to their normal surroundings - not waiting for them to come to us. We hope that the accordance to antisemitic statements will decrease, that anti-jewish expressions will be understood as such and not as normal, that Jewish culture and religion will be seen as an integral part of Europe and its people which is enriching.

How do you get there?

We work as network of 13 Thuringian cities – every city faces own problems with antisemitism. In close coop. we developed different kinds of actions. 3 small cities need education in schools (we plan puppet theater, workshops), 5 larger cities have community centers in social hotspot (we plan family days, games and cooking workshops), 3 metropolitain areas (we plan information stands in shopping malls) and in 2 cities often Jewish heritage is damaged by young people (we plan historical workshops, project weeks). Additionally we realise guided tours for school classes to show them how a synagoge works, what a Mikwe is, etc.. Additionaly we are in contact with the International Route of Jewish Heritage (GB) to transfer the results and experiences to other countries.

What is your story?


Who are you doing it for?

We adress stakeholders in fields of children and youth education, realise concrete actions with them and train them as multipliers. We adress mainly children and families – our experience is that they spread their new gained knowledge the best way and we think it is very important to reach the young generation. We adress a broad public that is not already interested in Jewish culture and takes part in lectures or the like, especially from social hotspots.

What makes your idea stand apart?

In Eastern Germany there are small Jewish Communities – the members are often of old age, they are mostly immigrants from the former SU, don't speak German so well and remain amongst each other. The special approach is that we plan these actions in really close cooperation with the Jewish community, the churches and many partners at location who organise the places for us (schools, family centers, shopping malls, etc.), where we can reach people with our offers.
