Koronatsiya Slova (Coronation of the Word)
Literature drives culture via novels, film scenarios, theatre plays, poetry and lyrics to music. Re-integration of Ukraine into EU in culture needs to build on exchanges in literature. The process must be open, all-inclusive, transparent and objective. To kick off the process, we need to bring together Ukrainian and European writers to meet, exchange ideas, plan and task-out a road map to the future. This has never been done before.How otherwise can we begin?
In 2014, the EU and Ukraine signed an Association Agreement to begin the process of drawing together. Europeans are not familiar with Ukrainian culture, nor most Ukrainians with European, and there is no process or plan to close this gap. The international donor community is challenged with pressing political, economic, and humanitarian needs. Yet the true integration of Ukraine into EU lies in cultural convergence. Ukraine needs to move from a post-Soviet culture into the cultural world of EU.
Too much is lost in globalization; the rich, varied European culture gets marginalized in Ukraine; Ukrainian culture doesn’t reach Europeans. Desired initial outcomes include: 1) key creators of culture dialogue, plan, act in concert to propagate their cultures to creators, consumers of culture in both geographies; 2) joint film, theater productions;
3) European films in Ukrainian cinema, on television, in the internet; and 4) translation, publishing and distribution of novels and poetry.
Since culture is such a diverse phenomenon, the challenge is how to begin. Literature offers entry into 4 key facets of culture. Writers need to initiate the process and become drivers of change. European and Ukrainian novelists, screen writers, playwrights and poets have never met together, except in infrequent individual encounters. A meeting/ conference would leverage scale and breadth to: 1) initiate familiarization, 2) identify barriers isolating cultures from each other, 3) draw up a roadmap for removing barriers with specific action steps, tasks, 4) identify participating organizations and effective leaders, 5) create the organizational framework for the process, and 6) identify sources of support for implementing the plan, thus effectively catalyzing the process of drawing closer.
The project aims to enrich the peoples of EU and Ukraine with literature, film, theater, poetry and music that would otherwise not be available. This would open all to broader EU values, aesthetic and intellectual experiences, developing diversity, open-mindedness, concepts of tolerance, creative and intellectual freedom. Writers, filmmakers, producers and performers would have expanded audiences and new creative inspirations. This would expand, enrich and strengthen Pan-EU values and society.
UA is a new partner of the EU. A joint cultural project is unprecedented. We would base it on an open, all inclusive approach (drawing on a unique open literary competition developed in UA over 16 years) for new manuscripts for novels, film scripts, theater plays, lyric poetry. We would also engage and partner writers, critics, scholars, publishers, producers, journalists, composers, performers from UA and EU in a pan-European movement to discover gifted new writers and to share their works..
