The 2008 economic crisis has had a strong impact on Southern Europe, driving many villages to lose their population because of their geographical isolation. Golden Retreat captures and reveals initiatives and innovating economies that give a new pulse to these abandoned micro-urbanities. Learning from individual energies, Golden Retreat contributes to the revival of the other declining villages of Europe, framing and supporting the construction of new infrastructures for an economic renewal.
Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece
Some isolated and abandoned territories are overtaking economical and social challenges thanks to inspired individuals in retreat (new way of life, new relation to work, no work at all or changing environment). They invest villages and reconnect them to the territory through a new scale (heritage, economy, social relations). Golden Retreat challenges the understanding and the report of these initiatives to other European villages in paralysis or recession before they reach such a critical stage.
Golden Retreat will raise awareness on potentials of micro-urbanities through the aesthetics field of Photography. These villages are our European civilization heritage we need to preserve and make thrive. Together with local actors, Golden Retreat will frame the development of embryonic structures all around Europe.
Golden Retreat has two phases. First, an itinerant journey through four Mediterranean countries will capture symptomatic examples of re-activated micro-urbanities deeply impacted by the crisis. Then, a series of exhibitions and workshops will present the collected initiatives in a French declining territory, to its local actors. Together with some of the initiators met during the trip they will participate to the elaboration of innovative models of urban, social and economical development, adapted to these specific contexts. Publications and extra exhibitions could help spreading the concept to other townships.
Golden Retreat is a European scale project that will both touch individual initiatives, with new actors carrying new models of economy, social interactions and services, as well as inhabitants and township actors of these declining villages.
Golden Retreat tries to understand contemporary issues by a subtle approach mixing artistic and socio-political perspectives. The combination of these fields aims to reveal a common European Heritage.
