Proposal

Idea pitch

The project aims at involving communities from rural areas across Europe in a participatory process using PhotoVoice, a method combining photography with grassroots social action to discuss, understand and identify challenges and priorities. This process will allow to strengthen the community self-perception and enforce a bottom-up decision making process to address challenges such as unemployment, sustainable development, integration of migrants, position of youth, social inclusion.

Where will your idea take place?

Broccostella, Italy

Why does Europe need your idea?

In Europe the increasing urbanization and the depopulation of country sides, especially in South-East, is a concrete and alarming issue for communities in rural areas.
Educating organizations based in rural areas on PhotoVoice-based methods can help them increasing their awareness of local issues and boosting their advocacy capacity. Connecting rural communities allows them to share best practices and experiences, to find shared solutions to improve opportunities, especially for youth.

What is your impact?

Through the development of long lasting partnerships (network of organizations based in rural communities using PhotoVoice) positive social change is delivered.
Participants will gain the capacity to represent themselves through PhotoVoice and will acquire specific skills for advocacy and communication purposes. The use of visual arts in a context of social innovation will increase the capacity of the organizations and will improve the local participation in decision-making processes.

How do you get there?

Starting month: October 2016
Preparation: creation of the project’s website and on-line networking (1st and 2nd month)
Training on PhotoVoice: 2 representative of each partner will attend a training with the double aim to learn about how to conduct the activities in the local community and to start networking within partners (7 days in Italy) (2nd month)
Activities in the partners' communities: identification of target group(s)and participants, definition of the problem(s) , shooting sessions, participatory analysis, formulation of proposals to local authorities, evaluation and conclusions. (3rd and 4th month)
Final events of public art (itinerant exhibition of all photos in all communities involved), project’s evaluation, further activities of the network (5th and 6th month).

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

Target groups are grass root and youth organizations based in rural areas across Europe, that will use PhotoVoice method to promote knowledge and critical dialogue on important matters through group discussions stimulated by the pictures.
Beneficiaries are young residents of rural areas across Europe, who will participate in the PhotoVoice sessions delivered by partners, local authorities, municipalities and schools.
Audiences are all people who will visit the exhibitions and the website.

What makes your idea stand apart?

Participation of community in the process, not only during project implementation but even from the definition of the agenda until the presentation of results, and after, thanks to the website that will allow the project to last after the end of the grant.
Involving public administrations in order to create a cooperative and favourable climate and find sustainable solution together.
Applying PhotoVoice to life in rural areas, extensively explored in other continents but not in Europe.
