European Environmental Bureau
World Vision Brussels
This project involves approximately 70 European civil society organisations (CSOs) active in areas such as human rights, democracy, poverty, environment, sustainability, governance, economic justice, etc. The number of participating organisations is expected to grow in the future as the EU finances and implements the new universal framework of the SDGs. The implementation of the project will be co-ordinated by rotating lead organisations collaborating through an overarching steering structure.
There is a clear need at present for a broad, European, cross-sectoral, civil society alliance that is dedicated to ensuring the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the EU & its Member States. European CSOs need to move beyond their policy “silos” and to collaborate in monitoring and implementing this ambitious global agenda. This kind of alliance will strengthen EU democracy through involving civil society & citizens in policy implementation and monitoring.
Brussels, Belgium/European Member States
European civil society seeks to increase its impact on EU policy development and implementation, in the absence of regular structures of civil dialogue. The adoption by the EU and its Member States of the ambitious global SDG agenda means that there is now an opportunity for effective, co-ordinated engagement of European civil society to ensure the proper monitoring and implementation of the new agenda. EU CSOs must learn to work together cross-sectorally however, to have maximum impact.
To enable EU CSOs & citizens to have a greater impact on EU policy- development and implementation. To develop in the EU for the first time a broad, cross-sectoral, civil society alliance (SDG Watch) to work with the EU and its Member States in implementing, monitoring and promoting accountability for achieving the SDG goals and targets. To urgently shift the EU and its Member States towards a more sustainable model of development and encourage EU citizens towards more sustainable lifestyles.
Build a cross-sectoral platform for EU CSOs & link to global and national SDG initiatives
Launch the EU CSO alliance in Brussels in September 2016
Develop a website & promote alliance activities via social media & newsletters
Establish a secretariat with administrative & communications functions
Map EU and national CSOs involved in SDG implementation & develop a member database
Deliver training for members based on needs identified
Engage in targeted advocacy campaigns (including submissions to formal processes, meetings with EU officials etc)
Engage EU citizens with the new SDG agenda
Engage with other CSO networks, academia & other actors on innovative ways to achieve sustainable development
Communicate the needs of CSOs to the EU & its Member States re SDG monitoring & implementation
Civil Society Organizations in the EU and its Member States, The EU institutions, EU citizens and EU democracy, and Partner countries of the EU
No platform exists at EU level to bring CSOs from different sectors together to work collaboratively on policy implementation & advocacy. The ambitious & universal SDGs agenda requires such cross sectoral collaboration. This alliance is likely to become an important new partner of the EU institutions & a bridge to EU citizens. This model of self-organising, CSO participation in SDG implementation represents a new & innovative model of governance to renew & transform democracy in the EU.
