Institute of Ukrainian Studies
The name "Sensoteca" was coined out as a combination of two words "sense" and "biblioteca" that stands in Latin for "library". Our mission is to create an inclusive space for growing, learning and creating together that will be fully accessible for everyone including people with disabilities. We are creating a platform for synergy, social innovation and development for young people of Ukraine, where it doesn't matter if all your physical senses work accordingly.
In Ukraine people with disabilities are often excluded and discriminated against on everyday basis, be it education, employment, healthcare or other sphere. That's why many people with disabilities are forced to stay at homes without any opportunities for personal or professional development. In this way Ukrainian society is loosing a great talent and a source for change locking up the doors for those who have mobility difficulties or other health-based issues.
Our mission is to break down the stereotypes and diminish segregation by creating the fully accessible space where young people can mingle, develop, learn, create, innovate and have fun in the diverse environment. A space where it doesn't matter if you're blind, with green hair, on the wheelchair or speak a different language; a space where friendships are made having a personality in mind and not a disability. We believe that inclusive society is possible only if we treat each other equally.
0) We have already established key cooperation with local government and other partners; we work with blind children and youth organizing inclusive workshops, cycling races on tandem-bicycles,educational programs, literary evenings etc.
1) We will renovate the building of the library according to the principles of universal design, making it fully accessible for everyone. It will become the library of the future, we don't have yet in Ukraine.(Jun-Dec 2016)
2) Upon renovation, we will launch several mainstream activities: art classes, on-line radio, social innovation space. Beside this, we will remain open to other initiatives making it possible to realize your own idea with support of our resources.(Jan2017-...)
We are young people realizing this project for and with young people
*Young people, including people with disabilities who want to create, get inspired and develop;
*People all around Ukraine who still have soviet stereotypes about people with disabilities and their potential
*Social workers, artists, innovators, entrepreneurs, designers, journalists across Europe who are looking for a dynamic environment to create, work, learn and develop
* Everyone who is open to new ideas and discoveries
*we are innovative- we link together library, event space, social innovation hub, art center and so many other components in order to create space where everyone will feel comfortable, welcoming and free to create.
*we have different stakeholders- Sensoteca is a very fruitful cooperation of NGOs, local government and business that are connected by the same goal.
