Idea pitch

Societies and the nature of work are changing rapidly. Economic recession, unemployment, and transnational issues necessitate resilience and new solutions, but people and organizations work in silos, and there is often tension between tradition and development. Culture and heritage can become drivers of development based on cohesion and shared value. We will convene a diverse talent pool that will use Design-Data-Creativity and problem-solving tools in Solution Labs to solve local challenges.

Where will your idea take place?

Corfu and Thessaloniki in Greece, Zagreb, Croatia, and Dusseldorf, Germany.

Why does Europe need your idea?

Society and individual local communities are changing rapidly, and with technology advances, so is the nature of work. There is often a social barrier between the knowledge economy (tradition, culture and heritage) and value creation (tech, business), creating missed opportunity for urban resilience and employment. Our focus is to empower people who can bridge the two areas for social and economic value – people with diverse experience, skills and ways of thinking.

What is your impact?

Diverse partners (museums, heritage organizations, small businesses, local authorities, social organizations) work for the first time with diverse talent (artists, developers, archaeologists, anthropologists, entrepreneurs, engineers, tech) to create+apply new solutions to local challenges, and make connections that contribute to resilience among the local workforce and economy/society. Participants form a community of creative thinkers and doers in Europe.

How do you get there?

Preparation: select a challenge partner in Corfu, Thessaloniki, Zagreb, Dusseldorf, help them frame a challenge. Focus on Talent + Problem-solving: host a 3-day Solutions Lab in each city, convene a diverse talent pool, and introduce human-centered design, data and creativity tools to facilitate co-creation of solutions to partner challenges. Catalyzing others: Publish and disseminate a toolkit and course on Design-Data-Creativity tools for using tradition/culture to drive local development and impact. Online distribution of toolkit to all partners, local authorities, NGO networks and universities in participating cities through the local partners, and through European networks. Closing event in Greece featuring solutions and toolkit launch.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

A community of individuals from different sectors or expertise areas that will work together in new ways and diversity their individual skillsets and experience. Cultural institutions, small business owners or networks, local authorities and citizen sector organizations looking for new ways to leverage cultural/heritage resources as drivers of community development, and to co-create solutions with diverse stakeholders.

What makes your idea stand apart?

Connecting generations, sectors: engineering/research, business, cultural sector (mainly public sector in Greece), and emerging talent sectors of creative economy + tech (under- or unemployed in Greece). Breaking the silos of economic crisis isolation between Greece and other countries, and across sectors/professions. Creating a replicable model for getting individuals from different professions to problem-solve together, bridging culture/heritage/tradition and tech/business/urban development.
