Idea pitch

This project brings together a combination of organizations with different profiles with the attempt to engage them, and the border rural community in the IT-SI-HR Karst/Istra area, in a learning exercise where the present and past practices for management of rural livelihoods natural resources meet and confront over current issues (poverty, unemployment) and opportunities (policy, ICT, in-migration, organic farming).

Where will your idea take place?

Istra and Karst in the Italian-Slovene-Croatian border

Why does Europe need your idea?

Rural Marginalisation, loss of biodiversity, exclusion of civil society and rural inhabits from major decision making that is taking away natural resources / and pressing on local livelihoods and nature

What is your impact?

Strengthening of cross-boder cooperation for the common good and protection of biodiversity, Rural regeneration, Social Innovation, Private-public partnership for nature protection and rural regneration

How do you get there?

With cross-border networking and empowerment (storytelling, workshop, educational activities on social innovation) of those who are able to take action (ie Village commons, civil society groups). There are already existing structures as are village commons/common pool institutions which own land (declared Natura 2000 sites) and can potentially give a major contribution to prevent biodiversity and with this also embark on new venues of social innovation. Empowerment and capacity building should come from within the communities to break away from political elites who are taking unsustainable decisions benefiting only a few. With a learning-based approach we aim to network for knowledge transfer within rural actors and keep spreading examples of good practices for community regeneration.

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

rural inhabitants and nature protection in Istra and Karst region (Italian-Slovene-Croatian border) but we aim to spread out collaborations to other EU counties. We are seeking partnerships elsewhere as others could benefit from our learning-based model.

What makes your idea stand apart?

we show when and how collaboration with informal groups with formal structures as is a municipality can work and what it is needed to make this type of
private-public partnership well functioning:
benefiting the community and benefiting nature.
We will partner with a renowned Video Artist who will help us to create content that is novel and well accessible to different audiences (www.goina.it).
