Idea pitch

“Me and you – performing” is an international performing-arts project that aims at exporting Ukrainian experience in the field of confidence building, reconciliation and peace education through performing arts (for example so called “theater of the oppressed”) to Germany and European Union. The project aims at fostering mutual understanding by creating a non-verbal, performing dialogue on values and identity between different ethnic, religious and linguistic groups of society in Germany and Ukra

Where will your idea take place?

Lviv region/Ukraine; Landkreis Cham/Germany

Why does Europe need your idea?

The challenge addressed by the project both in Germany and in Ukraine is the need for new methods and approaches to intercultural dialogue and learning and integration in the context of migration (international or national) of war refugees with a Muslim background into new “hosting” societies. In both countries, these challenges can only be mastered constructively, if a dialogue is built up between all groups of society, in order to detract stereotypes, especially towards Muslim migrants.

What is your impact?

The project aims at strengthening mutual understanding between majority groups of population and those groups of population with an immigration and Muslim background (Ukraine: Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Crimea; Germany: refugees) on the basis of (1.) joint performing-arts projects (pantomime, theater of the oppressed, object art)and (2.) German-Ukrainian exchange of experience in the field of performing arts as an instrument of confidence building and intercultural dialogue.

How do you get there?

After selection of 3 NGOs in Lviv region and in Cham region on the basis of an application form, a 5-day Training-of-Trainers seminar on the methods of performing arts as an instrument of integration and confidence building will be implemented firstly in Lviv, then in Cham with activists of the partner organizations. After the ToT, these trainers will implement 8-weeks mini-projects in the field of performing-arts with groups consisting of 10 locals and 10 IDPs/refugees each. In December 2016, theater-festivals/expositions will be organized in Lviv and Cham. A small publication in German and Ukrainian language will be elaborated and printed to summarize the project results. In order to finance these festivals/expositions and project publication additional, local sponsors will be attracted.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

Target groups in Ukraine are 9 local activists representing 3 NGOs in Lviv region that actively work on a daily basis with IDPs from Crimea. These will work with in total 60 beneficiaries (30 locals and 30 IDPs from Crimea). Target groups in Germany are 9 representatives of 3 NGOs or educational institutions in Cham district that work on a daily basis with war refugees. These will work with in total 60 beneficiaries (30 locals and 30 refugees).

What makes your idea stand apart?

We are planning to import social innovations from the European boarder region (Ukraine) to Central Europe (Germany), therefore from one of the applying EU-neighborhood states to one of the founding states in order to shape a peaceful European future – by opening minds through performance, theater and art.
