Idea pitch

KOOKMET is a mobile kitchen that pops up at public places. It works like this: gather a colourfull bunch of people, give them grocery lists and send them out for shopping on a local market. On the mobile kitchen the participants learn to prepare a healthy meal by using cheap, local and seasonal fresh food products in a simple and delicious way. They get to know a place by discovering the market and meet new people while sharing a meal. The concept is simple and proven.

Where will your idea take place?

Brussels, Bordeaux, Madrid

Why does Europe need your idea?

Seclusion and Health
Europe could be one big (sometimes even happy) colourful village, but instead is turning into a fortress with secluded communities. We're building walls between people who are mostly scaring each other, while nurturing very bad eating habits and calling it comfort food.
New people coming from real scary places are seen as threats and potential crooks and thieves. Food is merely seen as a fuel to survive, eating up precious time that could be spend behind a laptop or TV.

How do you get there?

1 - everything on the table
Anyone with ideas and a love for food, eating and/or people: we have our experience, you have yours. Let’s go explore the city, see how and where people can get cheap and healthy ingredients, find out how they cook and add these 2 to find the perfect KOOKMET spot and turn it into a new meeting place.
2 - draw, scratch, redraw
designers & technicians: design makes objects talk, let’s create a language that everybody understands. But design is useless without functionality. What about weight, brakes, which kind of cooker, …
best of the rest: Spread the message, make connections. Develop plans and tools.
3 - Do It
Put everything together, build a prototype, roll out the kitchen and see what happens. Once it works, it’s time to let go and let the locals take over.

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

Ourselves and all the people like us: Europeans.
We don’t believe in divide and conquer. We believe in unity, through diversity.
The great thing about the project is that there’s a part in it for everyone: cooks, builders, social workers, refugees, locals, old and new people, hungry people and big belly waggling new friends.
From co-creating it from the start, rooting it up, to just putting feet under an amazingly healthy and goodlooking table when it’s time to share the meals. No one is left ou

What makes your idea stand apart?

There is a lot of effort being put in research, european networks and exchange of information. But the fact of the matter is that more often than not this information does not get back to groundlevel, the people.
Thats why we propose a different solution. Solutions where people are trying things, some things work, some things fail. But we always try again. Solutions for public places where social innovation is festering.
We are the firestarters, looking for the ones keeping the fire alive.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

Anyone who's got experience with tools and prototypes used in public spaces to improve living together, is welcome to share that experience with us. We welcome other organisation who want to use our space as urban lab to improve citylife. Urban farmers who are looking to cultivate urban space, using concrete bricks, wood and material instead of seeds and earth.
