Idea pitch

The aim of a project is to provide cultural decentralisation in Ukraine by scaling up an existing festival “Kyiv Contemporary Music Days” to a platform of concerts and lectures in different towns of Ukraine.
For this purpose, we make a call for managers who want to organise a concert or a lecture in their own town. We provide high l musicians from Ukraine and the EU, and managers should deal with all the organizational aspects in their cities.

Where will your idea take place?

Why does Europe need your idea?

At the moment, Ukrainian society has realized the lack of cultural decentralization in the country: all the big cultural events take place in the capital or two or three largest cities: the exact opposite of the situation in Western Europe, where significant cultural events (classical music festivals, concerts of important musicians etc.) occur in the largest, as well as in less populated cities.

What is your impact?

There will be a greater number of significant culture events (festivals, concerts, etc.) that we believe is influenced by the success of our project and is going to take place in small Ukrainian towns.
We need to spread the cultural initiative, which is already widely represented in big towns, across the country down to the smallest towns.
Also, we will contribute to the cultural exchange between musicians from EU and the public and the musicians from Ukraine.

How do you get there?

In April 2016, we announce the call for managers who want to organize lectures or concerts of contemporary classical music in their cities.
We give them certain requirements (i.e. the contract with a concert hall, the temperature in it, contacts with the local media etc), and if the requirements are satisfied, we move on to step 2: planning the concert of the participants of Kyiv Contemporary Music Days in December 2016 in their town. We cover the travel, accommodation costs of musicians and hall rental (if needed).
At the moment, we’ve already agreed with musicians from such countries as PT, DE, PL, AT, JP, ES, GB to join KCMD in December 2016.
Starting from August 2016, XCMD will provide high-level Ukrainian musicians to give concerts in small towns. At least 20 concerts are planned.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

Our target audience is the people who are interested in contemporary classical music: both professionals (music students, professors) and the general public. The successful experience of the festival KCMD in December 2015 (at the concert with the orchestra, we had 450 visitors - 2 times more than expected, and during almost all of the 17 events halls were 90%-100% filled) has shown that the public has a strong interest in contemporary music. This inspires us to work for them on.

What makes your idea stand apart?

Our idea involves revealing people’s on the ground organizational initiatives.
By its ideology, it is similar to open source: we provide the "code" (high level international guests musicians), and anyone can “install” it (to organize a concert).
This system, we believe, allows to disseminate contemporary music concerts and lectures widely across the country in a short time.
