Idea pitch

Challenge youth from various cultures/classes to find, develop, present, and apply their voices for social change

Where will your idea take place?

Brussels, Belgium

Why does Europe need your idea?

Some youth do not actively participate in politics. A survey, writes some don’t feel like their voices are being heard. Leading to apathy, indifference towards politics among youth. There is a gap between youth and the established order. Spoken word is booming as performing art, we want to create a movement with youngsters via spoken word. We want to promote intercultural dialogue, promote social justice, tackle social exclusion, increase self-esteem and create a safe space for self empowerment

What is your impact?

Aim to develop: A physical and virtual platform where young word artist can express themselves. Social and political expression will be given a space. Space where youth whose voices are not often heard to be centered and not marginalized. Creative solutions to solving some of societies most pressing issues while involving the individuals that are being deeply affected by this. Issues: xenophobia, homophobia, sexism, classism. More youth facilitators. By training, so they can give workshops.

How do you get there?

Trainings/activities travel for youth word artists/facilitators in San Francisco (April 2016), Johannesburg (Oct 2016), Brussels (July 2017), Hungary (Oct 2017). A virtual platform where youth from around the world can interact, share ideas, create new understandings together. Platform in which youth from all the participating countries upload content and interact. Website/app has to be user friendly with a snappy interface, linked with social media, easy to upload material. Video content created by youth that will document their travels to each country as well as the training. Uploaded to virtual platform. A documentary that will capture the different aspects of the project through out the two year project. Dissemination of the project by having the video shown on national TV in countries

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

For youth to develop and promote literature, poetry and spoken word among all groups, especially disenfranchised youth. Youth living in poverty, of immigrant background, facing religious and sexual persecution. For urban word artists to bring their art from the margin to the center. This will help improve economic and other development opportunities for these artists, thereby ensuring the sustainability of their art practices. Formal institutions, safe space for youth to share their voices

What makes your idea stand apart?

We are one of the few projects which uses the urban art form as a way to engage and empower youth. Project is not only about creating poetry, instead it aims to give youth the knowledge and skills to teach their peers. They will be able to pass on the knowledge to their peers as well as create an ever growing understanding of the true empowering aspect of urban word arts. In 2017 in Brussels, we will use this opportunity as a way to directly present the results of our work to parliamentarian.
