Mein Grundeinkommen e.V.
The way we think about work has to change! The most promising concept seems to be an unconditional basic income for everyone. However, the discussion about it is complex and often boring. We have changed this in Germany by crowdfunding 432.000€ for 36 random people as annual basic incomes. Now they're sharing what it really feels like to receive the money and how it changes their lives. Let's scale this to all Europe!
Digitalization is moving on and is going to kill millions of jobs. We have 50% youth unemployment rates in some European countries. The way we think about work and labour has to change! We need to think outside the box and discuss new concepts like an unconditional basic income.
We want to create public debates on the the idea of the basic income in many European countries.
By just doing it! We have started a successful experiment in Germany in 2014. We collect money via crowdfunding. Each time we reach 12.000€ we give it to randomly selected people as an unconditional basic income of 1.000€ per month. These (so far 36) people actually get to feel what receiving a basic income means and how it changes life and working situations. They share their stories with the media and created a big and productive public discussion on the topic. 250.000 users participate in the project by sharing and discussing their plans with basic income on our website. This website can easily be translated to other languages. What we need to do next is to create campaigns and public relations in other European countries.
Everyone would benefit from a real basic income. However, we are aware of the fact that it is mostly a topic for younger people of the so called Generation Y, who are looking for a balance between work and life and are looking for meaningful work. Another target group are the national initiatives in each country. We want to cooperate closely with them to accelerate their work in their countries.
Unlike typical political lobbying we don't want to convince anyone. We are only asking the people "What would you do if you had a basic income" and once we gave it to them, we tell their stories. This open, hands-on and non-violent approach is highly appreciated by the people and the media. We have had over 300 publications in all major German media within just one year. Obviously the idea of 'just giving new politics a try' is a very up-to-date concept.
