Idea pitch

Do you remember activities of democratic citizenship education (DCE) you took part at? Most probably you were an active part of them and created, performed or constructed something with others? In Russia DCE is officially part of the school education but unfortunately it's not effective. We want to bring fresh air into Krasnoyarsk schools through organizing inspiring DCE workshops guided by activists from European and Russian NGOs and build new ties between Russia and Europe.

Where will your idea take place?

Krasnoyarsk, Russia

Why does Europe need your idea?

Many DCE programmes realized in Russian schools have traces of patriotism or are of formal nature.Teachers lack qualification and motivation to perform this work in DCE field. European and Russian NGO-specialists could fill this gap. But often it doesn't happen because of existing mistrust between NGOs and schools and lack of positive experience of cooperation. Furthermore injured image of Europe and political misuse of contradistinction between Russia and Europe make the case more complicated.

What is your impact?

We want to create positive examples of common projects between Russian schools and representatives of NGOs from Europe and Russia in the field of DCE. Through that we want to reduce existing tensions and mistrust inspiring them for further long term cooperation towards more democratic, open, sustainable and participative communities in schools. We also want to show how non-formal citizenship education can be exciting learning process and bring real changes to the school environment.

How do you get there?

4 schools in Krasnoyarsk will turn into workshops of citizenship education where multiplicators from Russian and European NGOs will work together with teachers and pupils. Each school will have one topic: EcoVent, ArtVent, DiversVent and ActVent. The task will be during 1 week to discover this topic and to achieve real change in the school. Besides each team will take also a well-known figure from the past representing ideas of an open society (e.g. John Lennon). These heroes can be included by the teams into the idea they will implement as impulse for new formats. Each project team will be accompanied by video makers for creating inspirational videos. Results of the workshops will be presented right after this week to representatives of other schools and NGOs at the NONForum about DCE.

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

European and Russian NGOs acting in the field of democratic citizenship education, teachers, pupils, representatives of administration of Russian schools.

What makes your idea stand apart?

1. DCE is quite new topic for Russian schools. Not to mention collaboration of schools with European and Russian NGOs in this field.
2. It's not just a transfer of European technologies into Russian schools. What we want is learning by doing for school children, teachers and NGO actors for joint development and implementation of DCE ideas.
3. The project includes inspiring combination of topics, team constalation with a figure from the past that give impulses for new formats and senses.
