Art and new technologies to break the isolation of Europe’s mining regions. A group of international artists travels with a minibus to 4 mining regions, making contact with schools and local communities along the way to generate new ideas through public workshops. In the subsequent months, the projects proposed by the communities to transform their regions will be uploaded on a web platform, where they will be voted for; the best ones will be launched on a European crowdfunding platform.
Lviv Oblast, Ukraine; Ruhr, Germany; Viana do Castelo, Portugal; Sulcis, Italy
In recent decades, many mining sites have closed down, depriving the surrounding areas of a crucial economic resource. Mining areas are often mono product economies, socially marginalized and polluted, with high rates of disease and immigration. Our goal is to create a network of European mining areas – whether still active or recently closed – through participatory actions, the construction of a web platform and the support of projects and best practices, to raise funding from all over the EU.
Besides organizing workshops in the regions involved, the artists specialized in social art practice will produce a report of the journey through images, texts and videos. This report will be published on the web site, in order to display and share experiences, know-how and best practices internationally. Within 10 months, at least 4 requalification projects will be online and available for crowdfunding. The network of mining regions in Europe and Ukraine will thus be re-activated.
Mth 1. Preparation of the web platform with the 4 regions involved (Lviv Oblast, Ukraine; Ruhr, Germany; Viana do Castelo, Portugal; Sulcis, Italy), possibly to extend to other areas: maps, basic and contextual information. Opening of social network profiles and creation of an open community
Mths 2-3. Artists’ journey, workshops and meetings in the 4 regions and other European mining areas encountered along the journey. Production of materials for the report on the website and the social networks
Mths 4-7. The regions create projects and upload them online
Mth 8. Projects are voted for online, regionally
Mth 9. Public conference for the launch of crowdfunding in Oberhausen, Ruhr
Mth 9-10. Opening of crowdfunding campaign
Mths 1-10. Communication campaign (press, web and social networks)
Local communities, 20 persons for each workshop: miners, former miners, families, schools Tot.: min. 350 people
Art centres, Public institutions, Universities, international mining hubs (3 of which are already identified)
Citizens of the 4 mining regions, involved in the voting of projects
EU citizens (spectators of public events, visitors of web platform and crowdfunding)
Population of the mining areas involved, international audience in the 4 regions
A participatory project coordinated by international artists enlivens the creativity of local communities, sparks new ideas and proposals, strengthens their internal cohesion. It facilitates collaborations between adults, children, public institutions, miners and researchers, giving rise to unexpected and engaging perspectives. The choice to travel by land allows exploring Europe’s ‘minor’ routes, its wells and tunnels of both the present and the past, in order to connect also smaller entities.
