Novo kulturno naselje
In the part of the city numbering 50,000 residents – Novo Naselje, the Art Shelter will stimulate passive society by bridging needs of the purposeless youth and the hard living conditions. Local, and regional artists would present their work, in exchange receiving “shelter”. Consumers will be inspired to authentically, actively participate, while providing artists with accommodation, or residence.
Institutionalizing culture is the main objective of the association New Cultural Neighborhood.
Novi Sad, Serbia
Numerous young, local artists have no opportunity, nor space to present their creativity, significantly impacting the extent of consistent decline in cultural production. A cultural center will provide encounters among creative youth potentials who live art, and desire to further develop in that direction. The destructive behavior of young people is the biggest of our part of the city, but judging from activities so far, cultural content is what averts youth from violent behavior.
The main goal is that our city, and suburban district receive our own bastion of culture, a space where ideas blossom, citizens interact, and a place that inspires, and gives hope. Young people will be offered various activities discouraging them from spending time counterproductively by watching banal internet content, wasting time in the street, etc. Together with visiting regional artists, and interaction with them, young people will learn new things, and expand their horizons.
The road to achieving that goal follows different phases from 2009, when the first cultural and sport events were held. Different events and initiatives from that time onwards have evolved into permanent projects like theatre, film, musical festivals, etc. Now, after introducing our citizens to our vision and activities, and gaining their great support, this year we have launched the biggest initiative yet – establishing a Cultural Center. Negotiations have begun with city officials. The initiative was accepted because the City of Novi Sad entered the final leg of the election for European Cultural Capital for 2021. After finishing current extensive research, precise guidelines in the broadest sense will ease the foundation, and activation of the Art Shelter.
Above all this is for young people. By developing the conscience of local community, and expanding the cultural offer of our city, the Art Shelter project will defeat local isolation, contribute to cultural exchange, break social barriers of our post conflict society, and introduce and refine European values. Besides improving the position of youth within society, other age groups will have a chance to reinforce personal, cultural capacities, artistic programs, including social participation.
Unique diversity of the Art Shelter reflects the idea of a hostel inside a Cultural Center, where the program created by guests/artists becomes the sustainable aspect of this project. Artists offer programs for accommodations, while money from ticket sales remains in the Cultural Center. The program occurs “spontaneously”, not belonging to existing clichés, constantly expanding borders, and offering new opportunity for creation. Finally, intrigue of the Cultural Center lies in experimentalism.

Our citizens are already introduced to the concept through our prior work, and projects associated with the idea of the Cultural Center in our part of the city. Their opinions about the location, and the appearance is decisively important. Every day we exchange ideas with our neighbors, and enjoy their crucial support.
