Idea pitch

This is a project to be developed by GRIOT, an NGO and theater company that since 2009, investigates the contemporary and emergent afro-european identity in Europe and its implications in art and in society. The project includes 4 activities: a theater play, a documentary, an educational project and a cycle of conferences. Dysphonia is about the voice, about memory and oblivion and most of all about in between identities and its voice. That voice that can´t be silent because is a shared voice.

Where will your idea take place?

Lisbon, Portugal

Why does Europe need your idea?

The recent changes in Europe, makes us think about what is Europe and how borders and identities are dynamic. We aim to rethink identities in a way that includes the multiplicity of morphologies, ethnicities and religions that co-exist in European territory and are part of contemporary European identity and has a reciprocal connection with art. The project integrates black Africans, black Europeans and white Europeans, demonstrating in a very visible way that this is an unavoidable issue for all

What is your impact?

GRIOT develops a continuous work, trying to fight ethnic stereotypes of participation of blacks in society proposing a contemporary paradigm with echoes in society. By developing activities with multi-ethnic actors, academics and teachers, that can become role models, we aim to reclaim as a reality and a right a contemporary representation of Afro-Europeans. A year from now we expect a wider intersectional space for cultural reciprocity and aim to reach at least 3500 persons.

How do you get there?

Dysphonia includes 4 activities: a play “They Will Die as You made Them”, about Queen Njinga the most well known African heroin, approaching questions related to gender and the role of women in society. The play will be presented in a major theater in Lisbon and the company has plans to circulate in national and international territories; a documentary about memory and oblivion that will be showed in different festivals and in the headquarters of NGOs of afro-descendants that collaborates with GRIOT; a Educational Service - continuing the work that GRIOT has firmed with reformatories and neighborhoods with afro-descendants communities, based on theater and philosophy for children; and Conferences “Memory and Oblivion” in collaboration with Faculty of Arts of Lisbon.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

The structure of each activity of the project is thought as site specific, taking in consideration territory and geography issues as a key factor in access to art, information and knowledge. The educational service, conferences and the film reaches different publics: people at risk of social exclusion, academics and public in general, in order to reach a heterogeneous and multi-ethnic audience. The play aims to congregate all the above as you have to be seen before you are heard.

What makes your idea stand apart?

Teatro GRIOT is the only theater company, that we know about, that searches on stage the implications, borders and consequences of the contemporary European identity that integrates afro-descendants. In all of our projects we have a theater play, a cycle of conferences and an educational project and most recently a film/documentary, in order to extend our field of investigation to several areas and sectors, trying to reach an heterogeneous audience and produce knowledge.

For this project the relation with the community is primordial. In direct contact with communities all our projects intend to promote themes that allow us to rethink Europe, the territory that we live in, in its relation with Africa, we would like to receive feedback and questions about this. We would like through this platform to establish partnerships with institutions and creators in order to develop the company's projects in a long term perspective.
