Idea pitch

Created in 2015, CORETO is a pioneering cultural event with a unique format and content. Occupying the public squares and the public bandstands, it connects the city with its artists and culture, in all areas of musical and visual productions. It brings on stage a unique repertoire created by emerging composers, to be played by established philharmonic bands and ensembles, artistic interventions, performances, talks and workshops.

Where will your idea take place?

Porto, Portugal

Why does Europe need your idea?

We strike to make ends meet between emerging and young artists and communities. Understanding the value of these fresh streams of creative people and the power they can address to innovative ways of communicating, exploring and creating a conscious cultural heritage, reusing and revalidating spaces - like bandstands - otherwise not used, it’s the festival goal to facilitate and improve this relationship in the cities and in Europe as a multi-diverse platform for cultural exchange and heritage.

What is your impact?

The main aim is communicate to a heterogeneous audience the existence of a grounded tradition in our culture: the composition of music to philharmonic band and the use of the bandstand. What we say about the Portuguese culture at this first stage is something to project also in other European countries as well. At a further phase we would like to expand the project so we could achieve a platform of crossing between young creators from different countries and cities bandstands.

How do you get there?

For each festival edition, there will be an Open Call for composers and philharmonic bands. The selection will be made by a board of juries (not yet defined). After the application period, the bands will start rehearsing. There is a specific period where the composers will participate in the bands’ rehearsals, promoting the interaction of both parts. Artists involved are invited to participate and to create original work for the event. CORETO’s first edition is being produced in Porto, Portugal, and there will be a performance connecting the bandstand in Porto with one in Brussels.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

Local comunities, creative people from all disciplines, students. CORETO’s founding values define the festival implementation: the link between creativity and social interaction, its commitment for a cultural promotion of public spaces - the bandstands - and gather the creative people from different disciplines, groups and communities, the construction of a new musical repertoire, wider, divergent and with a concern to unite traditions and innovations; learning and awareness of all.

What makes your idea stand apart?

It's a global idea that can only be achieved locally, with individual contributions of people from each country who know the reality of each bandstand and surrounding community – summing up, local attention to global influence. The philarmonic band image as well as their repertoire and events and spaces in which it operates are stuck in time and its revitalization is symptomatic of what can be changed in Europe.

Major expenses

The main goal now is to gain a solid ground for the festival and to firm its identity. Hence, the financing will support that boost and expansion in the next editions to bring more European participants – cities, associations, artists, composers and bands from other countries in Europe. This festival edition is designed to be a pilot event to create its identity and furthermore expand and implement the concept in other European countries.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

We welcome people from other European countries, from different cultural backgrounds, to share with us their experience and information about their communities, organizations, etc. We want to find bandstands and other public stages in other cities, as well as musicians, bands and other artists who are interested in revalidating them.
