Idea pitch

Light-hearted approach to a serious problem. There are one and a half million people incarcerated in Europe and their number is growing because of the high rate of recidivism. Ex-convicts are ostracized by all European society and their chance to have a new start is denied.
We wish to organise a talent show in several prisons of Europe and let people outside prison vote for them online. Thus make people realise that those people behind bars are not only human but some of them are very talented.

Why does Europe need your idea?

Released prisoners start their new life with a huge disadvantage. They have little money, often no family to go back to, little chance or work, lost touch with the ever changing technology and life in general and are severally discriminated. These problems often lead to reoffending. Our common interest is to provide a chance back to lawful life. But there is no reintegration without an inclusive society.

What is your impact?

We want to change the way people see released prisoners. To show them that they are just like you and me. Funny, serious, good fun or boring, talented or not but human all the same. We want people to see prisoners and think about their talent for a while instead of the crime they have committed. We want society to see prisoners from another perspective, that is still exciting and novel at the same time.

How do you get there?

Music is the perfect tool to send our massage to a wide audience. An international talent show will benefit everyone. It will entertain the outsiders, give them a glimpse to a secluded world, give the prisoners motivation to achieve and a much needed attention to their feelings and stories. We would like to announce this project in as many prisons we can. There are a lot of prison radios in Britain, Norway and Sweden and 3 in Hungary with the necessary the technical conditions.
The first selection is at the prisons, then the contestants can send their songs online. The audience and a professional jury will send 6 songs to the finals, who will all be able to produce their audio clips which will be then again be put online. Both the jury and the general audience will choose their winners.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

For the prisoners to give them a chance to produce something of value and thus change their own perception of themselves and others views of prisoners. And for the general public to give them insight into an isolated world.

What makes your idea stand apart?

We use a light-hearted approach to tackle a very serious problem. By using the media of music that can be understood by everybody we can disseminate the message of brotherhood to the widest audience. We do not burden people with hard to understand explanations but reach their hearts through music. And it only takes a few minutes in this busy world. We hope the seed we thus sow will grow and blossom through the contestants as well as the public.
