Idea pitch

Step inside the European Parliament, walk in someone else’s shoes and make the right decision. "Legacy.online" is a serious game that takes place at the heart of European politics. Crossing the doors of the largest democratic institution in the world, the player will incarnate a Member of the European Parliament who has to vote for or against the TTIP, the currently negotiated EU-US trade agreement.

Why does Europe need your idea?

The information about international politics, and the EU in particular, is so difficult to understand that only a few very motivated readers can grasp it. We decided to make a serious game that anyone could play and enjoy – in essence, a small revolution.

What is your impact?

We aim to attract players of a wide range of backgrounds - from pro-EU to skeptics. We envision a total usage of about 50.000 to 200.000 players, depending on the translations that will be made, and following the work of PR to enlist mass-media in the promotion of the game.

How do you get there?

Backed by the Advocate Europe funding, we want the game to reach a mass audience and be promoted and distributed by large online media, such as LeMonde.fr, The Guardian, El Pais, VoxEurope, ARTE. Our bet is that we are directly in their core audience and they need content – as our previous contacts made it clear. By creating a video game whose information is 100% realistic, even if fictitious, we want to help their readers and our players grasp the complexity of any decision taken at the EU-level.

Who are you doing it for?

We are talking to educated, connected citizens reading the news at least once a week on reference online media (category – The Guardian / LeMonde.fr / El Pais / La Repubblica.it). The industry standard for web-documentaries is a player of 25 to 35 years old – having traveled at least once in the last year, most often english speaking. This is our core audience for such a game that can influence their own communities to participate through direct referrals on Facebook and Twitter.

What makes your idea stand apart?

Understanding what the EU does is the first step to support its philosophy. Serious games are the most advanced method to learn and one that has never been applied to the topic. We strongly believe that Europe as a whole can benefit from this new way to communicate. It makes the topic much more palatable because it makes it real and this reinforces identification and clears the way for connections. We aim at making it a reference tool for teachers and educators who speak about Europe and the EU.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

During the conception phase we would like to reach out to other project owners who investigated the field of interactive storytelling in the political genre. Coached by the writer of “Web-documentaries – a survival guide” – Matthieu Lietaert, we also expect to reach out with Upian – the largest French producer of such formats. Any advice from the Community is therefore very much appreciated in this field.
