Recent refugees crisis drew people’s attention on migration. But the phenomenon isn’t recent: war in Syria didn’t start yesterday and kids were lost in the Mediterranean long before most recent highlights in the news. Social tension and xenophobia are challenging EU governments. This project tries to respond to 2 main needs and rights: finding new ways for intercultural dialogue towards coexistence and understanding such a huge issue in its complexity, beyond platitudes and oversimplifications.
Project activities involve citizens and migrants, at local and international level, concretely working together to create cultural events. Main aims: fighting stigmatization of immigrants and building counter narratives to foster intercultural dialogue. Migration routes maps, information combating platitudes and stereotypes on migrants, a participated interdisciplinary methodology will help in diffusing awareness in key-countries of migration, such as Italy, Cyprus, but also Greece and Malta.
The project includes: 1) research on EU (especially Southern Eastern countries) laws on immigration, migration routes, statistics on employment of migrants in EU countries; 2) theatre workshops both in Italy and Cyprus in schools with a multicultural background to collect, exchange and create experiences with teens; 3) public debate involving experts along with educational and social workers but also open to general audience in Italy as well as mutual learning partnerships aiming to share experiences and expertises in Cyprus; 4) multimedia installation collecting and mixing results of all actions with the direct contribution of all project beneficiaries (experts, refugees, teens, artists, social workers and school teachers) in Italy, Cyprus, Greece and Malta.
Given the variety of actions, beneficiaries of the project are varied as well: teens and young people, activists, migrants and refugees, artists (involved in theatre workshops, performances and multimedia installation); practitioners and policy-makers, academics and experts, people from CSOs, social enterprises and initiatives, social and youth workers (involved in research and debate); citizens of all ages and backgrounds (involved in all activities as audience or participants).
Our strength is in our network and participants involved: different EU Med countries, currently dealing so closely with migration issues, are involved which is quite uncommon. Teens, adults, old and new Europeans, migrant people, refugees, various experts all working together make a strong project team. Moreover, analyzing the theme using inclusive artistic tools to be shared in public spaces, among people, will increase the information and consequently people critical sensibility
