Culture has Art as one of its expressions. In places where several cultures coexist and influence each other, the Inspiration is coming thanks to the contact between Artists and Communities. In Melilla we are going to have a group of artists who will get the possibility to be involved in migrants’ every day’s life through the Social Engaged Art (SEA) residency. Artists are going to play a major role in contributing to establish a new cultural “hybrid” and in its promotion.
After a successful process of European Integration we face a new challenge as a society, the integration of Migrants as well as the relation between Cultures. A wide range of European organizations declare the need to recognize and protect diversity. However, not enough attention is paid to Border Areas where Migrants communities are established. We found that it is in the seam of our societies where culture and religious beliefs of Migrant people become objects of ignorance, and even scorn.
We’re aiming to empower the migrants of Border Areas (Mellila) to contribute by their Culture into the process of Cultural Cohesion through development of SEA as a new way for Recognition.Establishing of the new and innovative form of social residency for artists within migrants’ community will help to re-think the idea of cultural inclusivity based on acculturation (as adaptations made by minorities in response to dominant culture) in order to create the Possibilities of two-way modifications.
The project is based on development of SEA residency as the first stage of Cultural Cohesion with Artists and Migrants within Europe.
Art will work as method for mutual understanding, cultural exchange and cohesion.The project is planned in 3 phases:
1 Initiate: Build the connections with social institutions in Melilla open to provide the work environment for 4 artists,as well as to have them involved in the life environment of migrants for a period of 2 weeks. Promote the opportunity among artists in Europe and Ukraine through an official Call for participation.
2 Secure: Strengthening the relationship between Migrants and Artists through realization of SEA residency.
3 Create: Artists in collaboration with Migrants create and present their own body of work on official exhibition.
The project is addressing 2 target groups:
1) The migrants of Melilla;
2) The European society represented by the artists.
Artists will play the role of creative adapter between Migrants and the European society as Host community. By the end of the project both target groups will be connected thanks to a newborn SEA, created in the name of Cultural Cohesion and Diversity.
A future of a more diverse Europe is based on the willingness to recognize other people’s culture as well as the Possibility of having your own culture changed by others. Artists were looking for inspiration in outlandish cultures from long time ago. But were they really engaged with a foreign way of life or fascinated by distinctive vision of the future? Were they ready to be affected by another culture? It is time for unconventional approach. Time for artists to use their colors for Cohesion.
