Arts for the City
Centre for Independent Social Research
We are also involving our friends - independent curators Liza German and Maria Lanko from Kiev, Ukraine, and Linnalabor from Tallinn, Estonia http://www.linnalabor.ee/
The ties between European twin cities are actualized by creating a symbolic network of artistic installations in their public spaces. The installations are interconnected as parts of one puzzle. The emergent picture of connected cities is growing with every new local team building an installation twinning its city with others. This picture and network of twinned cities is visualized on project web-site. The project forms sense of co-presence and metaphor of cultural connectedness of twin cities.
Baltic sea region, Russia and Ukraine
In the context of obstacles to connectedness of Europe, Russia and Ukraine there is an urge to remind, make-sense and make-believe their peoples that they are connected. This can be done by the means of culture.
We aim at twinning as many European, including Russian and Ukrainian, cities as possible to form a symbolic network and to create a vivid picture of European connectedness.
We start weaving the network with installations in St.Petersburg, the city we reside in, and its neighboring twin cities Tallinn and Helsinki, and will twin Vilnius, neighboring, but indirectly connected. Cities will keep on twinning other in Baltic sea region, Ruhr area and Ukraine and network will grow in progression all over Europe. We will spread the word to our friends and friends of our friends. The visibility of the process, the innocence and beauty of the gesture will be our allies.
For the citizens of the twin cities who can feel connected and twinned through the project. For the creatives, experts and activists from different cities, who can imagine and build the future together while creating installations. For ourselves for we want to do something to tackle the obstacles to cohesiveness and peace in Europe, Russia and Ukraine.
It is simple and deep, it is self-growing and inclusive, it is conceptual and sensual.
