Place to Place: The Drawing Exchange is a nomadic project collecting drawings from people across countries in Europe. The public is asked to draw an image that reflects their relationship to the physical place they are in at that moment. The project will be housed in a converted van, from which the public will be invited to view the archive of drawings, as well as contribute a drawing. Over 4 months the van will travel to multiple countries in Europe setting up in various public spaces.

Why does Europe need your idea?

As the refugee crisis increases, different narratives about our relationship to place emerge. Amongst these narratives are many nuances. This project seeks to promote awareness, understanding, and consideration of the many perspectives and relationships to place.

Much of mainstream media exists within national borders. This project seeks to create a transfer of knowledge that is not constrained by borders, and is spread directly from person to person.

What is your impact?

I aim to collect 2,000 drawings. Not only will this provide an important reflexive tool for people as the project travels, but it will also form an important document in Europe’s history. The archive will be digitalized and accessible online with the aim to reach a wide and diverse audience and a publication will be printed and distributed. The physical archive will be donated to an organisation or organisations throughout Europe. I hope ultimately to have promoted understanding and compassion.

How do you get there?

June 2016: Connections with various relevant organisations will be made and will inform much of the route throughout Europe.

July – August: The structures to house the archive will be designed and built in the van. The design will also incorporate living accommodation.

September – January 2017: The project will take place over 4 months traveling to the different destinations. This will include various public spaces and streets as well as in pre-arranged destinations at museums, cultural institutions and social organisations. Drawings are also continually uploaded to an online platform.

January - February: The van returns to the UK. The archive is loaned in the long term to various institutions, including public places such as schools. A publication about the project is printed

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

The target group of the project is broadly speaking the general public in Europe. I also want to work with refugees as part of the project, although this will be done with care and sensitivity. I will also work to engage governments and NGOs with this project as well as other relevant cultural and social organisations.

What makes your idea stand apart?

The project spans multiple countries across Europe and comes into contact with people in a very direct way. By taking place in public spaces across Europe, the project accesses our common spaces and uses them as sites of creativity and learning. The project will also access a wide variety of organisations, which will form a useful network of organisations interested in cultural cohesion and the arts. This idea uses the potential of art to communicate complexity regardless of a shared language.

What do you need from the Advocate Europe community?

I would like to find out about more organisations across Europe that I could link up with. They could host the project at the organisation, or might want to host the archive after the drawings have been collected.
