Idea pitch

This project brings together 30 students, staff, researchers, journalists, policy-makers and NGO representatives working on sustainability at universities across Europe. Through two multi-stakeholder dialogues and 5 online working groups, this group develops an open-source toolkit on how to design, lobby for, start-up and run sustainability projects, initiatives and governance platforms that build partnerships between students, staff and faculty. The findings will be publicized across Europe.

Why does Europe need your idea?

Europe's 4400 universities should be important agents of change to advance sustainability through their education, research and operations. But a core challenge to make universities more sustainable is that partnerships between students, staff and faculty are lacking. Way too often, each stakeholder group is running isolated and invisible sustainability projects and initiatives on their own. As a result, synergy effects and alliances remain unexploited and change is only incremental.

What is your impact?

This project aims to identify, synthesize and publicize projects, initiatives and governance models across Europe that successfully build partnerships between students, staff and faculty to advance sustainability at their universities and beyond. Lighthouse examples will be made public through an online toolkit, incl. videos, guides, presentations on how to adapt and implement them in different university. Participants will help in the dissemination of the toolkit.

How do you get there?

1) 01-30.06.2016: Open applications for 30 students, staff, faculty, journalists, NGO representatives and policy makers from across Europe
2) 10.07: Applicants notified. Rejected applicants will be updated about project results over coming months
3) 20.07: First webinar with participants.
4) July-Aug: Participants prepare in online working groups for first stakeholder dialogue
5) 24-27.08: First stakeholder dialogue meeting in Bochum
6) 14.09: Public webinar to widely share insights gained during stakeholder dialogue
7) Sept-Jan: identify and analyze great examples of projects, initiatives and governance models. Journalists publish articles.
8) 25-28.01.2017: Second stakeholder dialogue in Maastricht
9) Feb: Finalize toolkit
10) February: Final webinar to share project results

What is your story?

-

Who are you doing it for?

1) Students, staff and faculty looking for ways to build partnerships through innovative projects, initiatives and governance models
2) University management interested to create conditions for sustainability initiatives to flourish.
3) Policy-makers wanting to design national policies to advance sustainability in higher education
4) Researchers studying change processes towards sustainability in universities
5) NGO representatives working on sustainability at universities

What makes your idea stand apart?

Transferability: We expect that the project results will inspire sustainability projects, initiatives and governance models in other educational organizations, like colleges, schools or kindergartens.
Leveraging resources: The projects, initiatives and governance models that we synthesize will require students, staff and faculty to leverage resources from their universities, in form of office space, mandates, training or working budgets. This multiplies investment into the project.
