Association for Creative Wandering Samonik
DRAW&WRITE: Kids from Skopje will be asked to submit their drawings and essays on how they imagine their ideal future city.
SHARE: The submissions will be uploaded on a website for the world to see.
THINK&MAKE CONNECTIONS: Young European creatives will be invited to join the conversation online at first and then asked to apply for a workshop in Skopje to turn the kids’ imaginings into a reality.
DO: At least one of the imaginings turned concepts will be implemented in Skopje’s public space.
The Do Tank project was inspired by the idea that culture shouldn’t be static. In order for culture to exist citizens have to actively participate in it. The current cultural tendencies imposed by the Skopje 2014 project, a nation-building project created by the political elites, completely exclude this aspect. Skopje’s public space is being stifled by statues and shopping malls and there is less and less space for social interactions in public space which are completely non-commercial.
The immediate project outcome will be to turn at least one of the kids’ imaginings into a public space intervention (the DO part of the project) as a contribution to increasing the sociability of Skopje’s public space. The intergenerational and interdisciplinary project format could be reused and turn this initial idea into a recurring annual residency where people from all walks of life can apply their creativity and realize their public space ideas, contributing to better city living.
DRAW&WRITE: The project team will create an open call entitled “How Do You Imagine Your Ideal Future City?” aimed at elementary school children aged 8-11. The call will be disseminated to all elementary schools in the area of Skopje.
SHARE: All of the submissions will be uploaded on a website and an online conversation will be started with potentially interested young European creatives.
THINK&MAKE CONNECTIONS: Up to 20 young European creatives will come for a workshop in Skopje to turn the kids’ imaginings into a reality, i.e. work on concepts based on them.
DO: At least one of the workshop concepts will be implemented in Skopje’s public space.
Elementary school children and young Europeans will be this project’s target groups. They will be the ones who will directly participate in the project, using it as a platform for utilizing their civic creativity. As a result of this, the citizens of Skopje and potentially other European cities will reap the benefits of the concepts that will be envisaged by Skopje’s elementary school children and the young Europeans – they will be the project’s ultimate beneficiaries.
The unfettered imagination of children will be at the heart of this project, being used as a source of inspiration for the creation of concepts that could improve the sociability and playability of public spaces. The starting point will be the ideas suggested by children, which will then be taken over by a creative interdisciplinary team of young Europeans, bringing various perspectives that could work only in favor of the project and making it better.
