Idea Sketch | Proposal

Idea pitch

From July 2016, Slovak Republic will chair the Council of the EU. The entire Europe will direct its attention to our political scene and citizens. No easy ride. Slovakia is infamous for its negative attitude to quotas for refugees, to minorities and most recently, after the result of March elections, for a neo-fascist party in parliament. AGORA EUROPE aims to engage both experts and wide public in discourse on issues of European integration and identity, culture and values. On our attitudes.

Where will your idea take place?

Nitra, Slovakia

Why does Europe need your idea?

We live in Europe, in the age of social, political and economic turbulences that shift the paradigm of our lives. The waves of refugees test the resistance of our boarders but also the fundaments of democracy, tolerance and solidarity. From now on, nothing will be the same. Violent emotions in the society have drifted out xenophobia, leading to defence of standpoints – national, cultural, religious, economic. What will „our“ Europe be like tomorrow? And what will we – its citizens be like?

What is your impact?

SPREADING KNOWLEDGE AND FACTS – TEACH OPENNES AND TOLERANCE TOWARDS OTHERNESS – PROTECT VALUES – FORM ATTITUDES. With the help of experts from fields of politic studies, economy, ecology, sociology, philosophy, religion, art studies, as well as actual, personal life-stories, we intend to raise questions and search for answers regarding the current issues in European politics, culture, religion and history. Thus, we aim to stop the rise of xenophobia, racism and ignorance.

How do you get there?

Public debates + Art interventions: LIVE LIBRARY– discussions with young people and experts at schools • PUBLIC LIVING ROOM – public talks in the streets, housing estates, and villages • PUBLIC DEBATE Ode to Joy? – international, interdisciplinary discourse of experts • JUDGE EUROPE – student debate, arguments for and against + audience votes • GREAT LIFE-STORIES OF EUROPE – fate of ordinary people, oral history, film screenings • LIVE STATUES OF EUROPE – renowned historical figures, performances at schools and in the streets • 10 COMMANDMENTS OF EUROPE – interactive panel for public, choice of values and principles • LIVE MAP OF EUROPE – interactive e-map for the public, real and visionary • EUROPE WITH LEVITY – stand up comedy • WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT EUROPE – knowledge quiz.

What is your story?

Who are you doing it for?

YOUNG PEOPLE – students of grammar schools and universities, fresh graduates, visitors of independent culture centres, social networks • GENERAL PUBLIC – Nitra region + Bratislava + other towns + public reached via national and international media • INDIVIDUALS – people with a story, representatives of minorities, extremist groups, refugees in Nitra, visitors of project events, civic rights activists • EXPERT PUBLIC – professionals, scientists, teachers, artists from Slovakia and abroad.

What makes your idea stand apart?

Project AGORA EUROPE puts forward important topics of Europe in public space, under the guidance of experts from different fields of profession, in a factual, yet creative and engaging way. The activities are original and complementary. The possibility to start the project during the 25th edition of the International Festival Divadelná Nitra (with the patronage of the president of Slovak Republic, and ministers of foreign affairs and culture) stresses the project’s unique character.
